Charging your Kuga at home
Britain's best selling plug-in hybrid charges modestly and that is the useful thing to know before buying a cable. Both the 225 PS car from 2020 and the 243 PS car from 2024 take 3.7 kW on AC, which means a 16A Type 2 lead does everything the Kuga can use.
A 32A cable will not speed it up. The onboard charger is the bottleneck, and on a plug-in hybrid that is by design: 14.4 kWh does not need 7 kW behind it to be full by breakfast.

Figures are calculated rather than quoted: battery divided by power, 13 per cent for losses, quarter hour rounding. Electric range is up to 35 miles WLTP on the 2020 to 2023 car and up to 42 on the 2024 onwards version, so a full charge is worth roughly that much of the commute. The range column is deliberately cautious, at 3.5 miles per kWh.
Which length to buy
The inlet is on the nearside front wing, the kerb side of the car. That is convenient: park nose in on a driveway with the wall box on the house wall and five metres usually has slack. Reverse in and the lead has to come back down the length of the car, which is where ten metres earns its keep.
How these cables are built
It is a CE marked IEC 62196-2 cable, IP55 against the weather, rated to work between -30C and +50C.

Which cable does a Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid need?
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and 16A is the right rating. The car accepts 3.7 kW on AC, so a 16A lead delivers everything it can take. Both the 225 PS and 243 PS versions are the same in this respect.
Will a 32A cable charge my Kuga faster?
No. The Kuga's onboard charger limits it to 3.7 kW, so a 32A cable delivers exactly the same power and the same charge time. The only reason to buy 32A is to keep the cable for a future car that can use it.
How long does a Kuga PHEV take to charge?
About four and a half hours from empty on a home charge point, and around seven from a three pin socket. Most owners plug in with something left in the battery, so the real figure is usually a couple of hours.
Where is the charging socket on a Ford Kuga?
On the nearside front wing, the kerb side, ahead of the driver's door. It is the same position on both generations of the plug-in hybrid.
Does the Kuga come with a charging cable?
Ford's supplied kit has varied by model year and trim, and a used Kuga often arrives with nothing. If the boot has a three pin granny lead only, a Type 2 cable is what you need for a wall box or a public post.
