When twenty metres is the right answer

Twenty metres sounds like a lot until the charge point is on the front wall and the parking is round the back. This cable exists for the houses where the electrician put the unit where the consumer unit was, not where the car goes, and for flats and courtyards where the nearest post is two spaces away.

It is also the cable that stops a second installation being necessary. A wall box moved or a second unit fitted runs into four figures once the work is done. A longer lead costs a fraction of that and can go in the boot when you move.

What it gives you at home

At 32A on a single phase supply this cable carries 7.4 kW, and 7.4 kW is the ceiling for almost every British house regardless of what the car is rated for. British homes are supplied with one phase, so an 11 kW or 22 kW car rating lands at 7.4 kW on the driveway. This cable is not the limit, the supply is.

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 40 kWh battery Empty to full, 60 kWh battery Empty to full, 80 kWh battery Range added per hour
    20m Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase 7.4 kW 6 hours 9 hours 15 mins 12 hours 15 mins about 26 miles

Hours are worked from battery size against power drawn, plus a 13 per cent allowance for what is lost as heat, rounded to fifteen minutes. Range added per hour assumes a year round 3.5 miles per kWh rather than a best case figure.

    Handling a cable this long

Twenty metres of 32A cable has weight to it, so give some thought to where it lives. A wall bracket by the charger keeps it off the floor and stops the ends being dragged across gravel. Coil it in loose loops rather than tight turns, and uncoil the length you need rather than charging through a tight bundle.

If the run crosses a path, a rubber cable protector is worth the ten pounds it costs. It is also worth checking the car park rules where you park, since some managed sites have their own view on cables crossing walkways.

    How it is built

Made to IEC 62196-2, CE marked, and rated IP55 from -30C to +50C so it lives outdoors all year. Backed by a two year manufacturer's warranty, with free next working day delivery and a 30 day return window. Free next working day UK delivery, and a 30 day return if twenty metres turns out to be more than you needed.

    20m charging cable questions

Will twenty metres cost me charging speed?

Not measurably. This conductor size is specified for 32A over the full length, and the voltage drop that remains is small enough to disappear inside the rounding on a charge session. A 20 kWh top up takes the same time on this lead as on a short one.

What is the longest EV charging cable I can buy?

Twenty metres is the longest we make, and it is about as long as is practical to handle and store. Beyond that the weight and the coiling become the problem rather than the electrics. If you need more reach than this, an extension cable added to a shorter lead is usually easier to live with.

Will it work with a 7kW home charger?

Yes. A 7 kW or 7.4 kW home wall box is a 32A single phase unit and this cable is rated for exactly that. It also works on 16A chargers and on public Type 2 posts, which are the same connector.

Can I use it in the rain?

Yes. It is IP55 rated and built for outdoor use between -30C and +50C. Keep the connectors off wet ground when you can, and there is no need to dry them before plugging in.
