Charging your Capri at home

The name is old and the platform is not: this Capri shares its underpinnings with Volkswagen's MEB cars, and it charges like them. Eleven kilowatts on AC, three phase, on both the 58 kWh Standard Range and the 79 kWh Extended Range.

Those 11 kW and 22 kW ratings need three phases to appear. On a normal home supply the number is 7.4 kW. So the cable that matters at home is the 32A single phase Type 2 lead, which carries the full 7.4 kW. The three phase version is for a workplace post, where the car will use all 11 kW.

How long a full charge takes

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. The columns are the 58 kWh Standard Range, good for up to 288 miles WLTP, and the 79 kWh Extended Range at up to 390. Range added per hour assumes a year round 3.5 miles per kWh rather than a best case figure.

Which length to buy

The port sits on the offside rear quarter panel, the far side from the kerb. On a driveway with the wall box on the house wall, reversing in puts the socket within a couple of metres and 5 metres is plenty. Nose in, or park on the road, and the lead runs the length of the car and across it, which is a 10 metre job.

Ford does not publish the port side itself, so that position comes from EV Database. It matches the MEB cars the Capri is built on, but it is worth a glance at your own car before ordering the shortest lead.

How these cables are built

Built to IEC 62196-2 and CE marked, with an IP55 rating that covers rain and dust on an exposed driveway, and a working range of -30C to +50C.

The three pin version is an IEC 62752 unit, CE marked and IP67 sealed, specified -30C to +60C. It carries a two year manufacturer's warranty, ships free on next working day delivery, and can go back inside 30 days.

Which charging cable does the electric Ford Capri need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 32A single phase for home use. The car accepts 11 kW on three phase, but a British house supplies one phase, so 7.4 kW is the practical ceiling and the 32A cable carries all of it.

Is the 22kW three phase cable worth it for a Capri?

Only if you regularly charge somewhere with a genuine three phase supply, such as a workplace. There the car takes 11 kW and a 79 kWh Extended Range drops from about nine hours to six. On a home supply it delivers exactly what the single phase cable does.

How long does a Ford Capri take to charge at home?

From empty on a 7.4 kW home charger, roughly nine hours for the 58 kWh Standard Range and about twelve for the 79 kWh Extended Range. An overnight window puts back around 250 miles on either.

Does the Capri come with a Type 2 cable?

Ford's own charging page lists a Type 2 Mode 3 cable with the car, but supplied kit changes with trim and model year, and used cars rarely keep it. Check the boot before your wall box is fitted.
