Find your Volkswagen and the cable is the last column

Look up the model rather than reading down the page. The last column names the cable, the third tells you what the car will actually draw at home, and the link takes you to the rest.

Ten models, all Type 2, covering the ID family, the GTE and eHybrid plug-in hybrids and the two older battery electrics. The spread of home charging rates across them is wider than the badges suggest.

What the third column means

The figure that matters is what the car draws on one phase, because one phase is what a house has. At 230 volts and 32 amps that is 7.36 kW, which everyone rounds to 7.4. Three phase ratings are for commercial buildings and public posts, and quoting them at a domestic customer is misleading.

What actually separates one Volkswagen from another

The ID cars, ID.3 through ID.7 and the ID.Buzz, take 7.4 kW at a British house and want the 32 amp lead. The Golf GTE, the Golf eHybrid and the Passat in both forms sit at 3.7 kW, and the Tiguan eHybrid at 3.6, so a 16 amp lead already covers those.

The e-Golf and e-up! are the pleasant surprise. Their chargers are single phase, which means a British house hands them their full rated speed with nothing lost to an absent second and third phase. That is rarer than it should be, and it makes those two among the best matched cars to British domestic wiring in this whole catalogue.

On port position Volkswagen follows the group pattern: the MEB battery electrics charge from the rear offside, the plug-in hybrids from the front. The Mk7 e-Golf and the 2015 to 2023 GTE are front central behind the badge, which is a different cable run again.

Choosing a length

Think about where the car actually sits rather than how big it is. A short car parked badly can need more cable than a long one parked well.

An ID.Buzz with a rear offside socket is the case for fifteen metres if your charge point is in a garage. A front central GTE parked nose in is the case for five.

How these cables are built

The construction is common to the whole range, whatever your car: IP67 sealed connectors, tinned copper cores, a flexible outer jacket rated for British winters, a two year warranty and free next working day delivery.

The same platform underpins the Skoda range and the Cupra range, and the charging answers carry across.

Every Type 2 Volkswagen EV on this page takes the same Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable; pick the length on that page. Older Type 1 cars use the Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable. All of them sit under universal cables.

Volkswagen charging cable questions

What does an ID.3 or ID.4 charge at on a home wallbox?

About 7.4 kW, which is what a 32A single phase charge point delivers. Any higher figure in the brochure is a three phase number.

Why is my Golf GTE limited to 3.7 kW?

Its onboard charger is rated at 3.7 kW, so the car sets the limit rather than your supply. A 16A lead is all it can use.

Does the e-up! get its full charging speed at home?

Yes. Its charger is single phase, so a British house supplies all of it with nothing lost to missing phases.

Where is the charge socket on a Volkswagen?

The MEB cars, ID.3 upwards, charge from the rear offside. The plug-in hybrids charge from the front, and the Mk7 e-Golf and earlier GTE from the centre of the nose.

Do I need a three phase cable?

No. A 32A single phase Type 2 lead delivers everything a British home charge point can give any car on this page.
