Fifteen metres, fixed to the wall box

Factory leads are usually five or seven metres because that is what ships in a box, not because anyone measured your parking. Where the gap is bigger than that, this is the lead that closes it: fifteen metres of 32A conductor with a moulded Type 2 head at the car end and a bare tail for terminating inside the unit.

Fifteen metres on the wall needs somewhere to go. A holster or a pair of hooks either side of the unit keeps it off the ground and stops the head being dragged across gravel every evening, and it is worth deciding where those go before the electrician leaves.

Two things to establish first: whether your model is built to have the lead changed, since a few are sealed units, and what the unit is rated at, because a 7 kW box wants this 32A lead and an older 3.6 kW one does not.

    What it delivers

At 32A on a single phase supply this is a 7.4 kW lead, which matches what almost every UK home charge point can provide. Fifteen metres of correctly sized conductor carries that without meaningful loss, so the car sees the same rate it would on the factory lead.

    Tethered 15m at 32A, single phase 7.4 kW 6 hours 9 hours 15 mins 12 hours 15 mins about 26 miles

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. The miles column uses 3.5 miles per kWh, which holds up in winter as well as summer.

    Tethered lead or extension

There are two ways to gain reach on a fixed unit. Swap the lead, which is this product, or plug an extension onto the end of the existing one. Swapping leaves you with one continuous cable and nothing to keep dry halfway along. An extension needs no wiring and no electrician, so it wins on cost and on speed if nobody is due to visit the house.

    How it is built

The cable meets IEC 62196-2, carries the CE mark, is sealed to IP55 and is specified from -30C to +50C. Warranty is two years from the manufacturer, delivery free next working day, returns accepted for 30 days. Free next working day UK delivery and 30 days to return it unused.

    Tethered cable questions

What does tethered mean on an EV charger?

A tethered charge point has its charging lead permanently attached to the wall unit, so you pull the cable off the wall and plug it into the car. An untethered unit has a socket instead and you bring your own cable. This product is the fixed lead for the first kind.

Can I fit a longer tethered cable myself?

We would not advise it. The lead terminates inside the charge point on the live side of the installation, so it is work for a qualified electrician, and some manufacturers seal the unit or void the warranty if it is opened. Check the manual or ask your installer before ordering.

Is 15m the longest tethered lead available?

It is the longest we supply, and longer than the five or seven metre leads most units ship with. Beyond this, handling and storage become the limiting factor, and an extension on a shorter lead is easier to live with.

Does swapping to a 15m lead change what the car draws?

It does not. The conductor is specified for 32A across all fifteen metres, so the unit still hands over 7.4 kW and the car still takes what it took before. The only thing that changes is how far from the wall you can leave the car.
