Kia spans a wider range of charging behaviour than most brands here, from a Type 1 first generation Soul to the 800 volt EV6 and EV9. Ten models, and the year on the V5 matters on two of them.

What the third column means

There is a single ceiling here and it belongs to your electricity supply, not to the car. Thirty two amps on one phase is about 7.4 kW. A car rated at 11 or 22 kW meets that ceiling and stops; a car rated at 3.6 kW never reaches it.

The Soul changed connector, so check yours

Telling them apart takes a glance. A Type 1 socket is round with five pins; a Type 2 socket has seven and is squared off along one edge. A lead for one will not physically go into the other.

The first generation Soul EV is a Type 1 car and needs a Type 2 to Type 1 lead. The second generation moved to Type 2. The Soul page covers both and tells you how to tell them apart without looking anything up.

What actually separates one Kia from another

The numbered EV cars, the EV2, EV3, EV4, EV6 and EV9, all take 7.4 kW at a British house and all want the 32 amp lead. The Niro sits just below at 7.2 kW on the older car and 7.4 on the newer, which makes no practical difference.

The plug-in hybrids are the ones to be careful with. The Optima and Sorento run 3.3 kW onboard chargers, so a 16 amp lead is already more than they can use, and the Sportage plug-in hybrid takes 7.2 kW. Buying a 32 amp cable for an Optima is not a mistake exactly, it just buys flexibility rather than speed.

Charge port position is the other place Kia varies. The EV cars and most of the range charge from the rear offside or an offside front wing, but the first generation Soul charges from the centre of the nose behind a flap in the grille, which is a genuinely different cable run.

Choosing a length

Get the length from your own driveway. Five metres where the charge point is next to the socket, ten for most layouts, fifteen or twenty where the unit is in a garage and the car is not.

An EV9 is over five metres long with a rear socket, so ten metres is the honest recommendation there. A nose-charging Soul parked head in can often manage with five.

Is the Kia Soul Type 1 or Type 2?

Both, depending on generation. The first generation Soul EV is Type 1 and needs a Type 2 to Type 1 lead. The second generation is Type 2.

What does a Kia EV3 or EV6 charge at on a home wallbox?

About 7.4 kW, which a 32A single phase lead delivers in full. The 800 volt architecture on the EV6 and EV9 affects rapid charging, not home charging.

Why is my Optima plug-in hybrid so slow to charge?

Its onboard charger is 3.3 kW. That is the car limiting itself, so a 16A lead already covers everything it can take.

Where is the charge socket on a Kia?

Mostly the rear offside or an offside front wing. The first generation Soul is the exception and charges from the centre of the nose.

Which length for an EV9?

Ten metres. It is over five metres long with a socket at the rear, so a shorter lead only works if the charge point sits right behind it.
