Which cable, and why one covers every Explorer
Three batteries are offered, 58 kWh Standard Range, 77 kWh rear wheel drive and 79 kWh all wheel drive, and all three sit behind the same Type 2 inlet with the same 11 kW AC charger. One 32A single phase cable is therefore the right answer whichever Explorer is on the drive.
A car quoted at 11 kW or 22 kW is quoting a three phase figure, and a single phase British house will give it 7.4 kW. The practical consequence is that the 32A single phase lead is the fastest useful cable at home, and nothing you buy will beat it there.

Each figure is the pack size divided by the power actually drawn, with 13 per cent added for charging losses and the result rounded to the quarter hour. Ranges are up to 273, 374 and 352 miles WLTP respectively, the all wheel drive car giving up a little to its extra motor. Range added per hour assumes a year round 3.5 miles per kWh rather than a best case figure.
Which length to buy
The socket is on the offside rear, the side away from the kerb, shared between AC and rapid charging. It is the MEB platform layout, and as with the Capri it comes from EV Database rather than Ford's own specification.
Practically: reverse onto a drive with the charger on the offside and 5 metres does it. Anything else, including kerbside charging, and 10 metres is the sensible buy. The Explorer is a big car, so the difference between the two lengths is more than it looks on paper.
How these cables are built
Construction is to IEC 62196-2 with CE marking, IP55 weather protection and a -30C to +50C operating range.
On the three pin side the standard is IEC 62752, with CE marking, IP67 sealing and a -30C to +60C range. Warranty is two years from the manufacturer, delivery free next working day, returns accepted for 30 days.

What charging cable does the Ford Explorer EV use?
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. For home charging take the 32A single phase version, which delivers the 7.4 kW a UK house can supply. All three battery options use the same inlet and the same 11 kW onboard charger.
Can the Explorer charge at 22kW?
No. The car's onboard AC charger tops out at 11 kW, so even on a 22 kW three phase post that is the limit. At home on a single phase supply it settles at 7.4 kW.
How long does an Explorer take on a home charger?
From empty at 7.4 kW: around nine hours for the 58 kWh car and about twelve for the 77 and 79 kWh versions. Most charging is a partial top up, so an overnight session covers a long commute comfortably.
Which side is the Explorer charge port on?
The offside rear quarter panel, the side away from the kerb, with AC and rapid charging sharing the same flap. Worth confirming on your own car, since Ford does not state it in the UK specification.
