The Leaf changed connector, so check the year

The two inlets are easy to tell apart once you look. Five pins and a round outline with a latch on the plug is Type 1. Seven pins with a flattened top edge is Type 2. They are not interchangeable and no adaptor bridges them, so the choice has to be right before you order.

The early Leaf is a Type 1 car and the later one Type 2, and the Leaf page covers both with the years set out so you can settle it from the V5 rather than by opening the flap. If you would rather just look, counting pins takes ten seconds.

Why the brochure figure is not the home figure

One phase, 32 amps, about 7.4 kW: that is the whole of domestic charging in Britain. The table translates each car's rating into what it will actually pull on that supply, which is the only figure worth comparing when you are choosing a lead.

How the models differ, and where it matters

The Ariya, Micra and later Leaf all reach 7.4 kW, so nothing smaller than a 32 amp cable makes sense. The e-NV200 Combi takes 6.6 kW, and the e-NV200 Van varies between 3.3 and 6.6 kW depending on how it was specified, so the van is the one to check. A smaller rating can be the better arrangement. A single phase charger delivers everything it claims on a domestic supply, whereas a three phase one loses two thirds of its phases at the meter.

What makes Nissan unusual is the port position, and it is the same on every Leaf built between 2011 and 2024: dead centre of the nose, under one flap that also houses the rapid charging socket. No other high-volume brand does this. It means the cable run on a Leaf depends almost entirely on which way you park and hardly at all on the width of the car.

The Ariya breaks the pattern and is also the one car in this whole catalogue whose port position genuinely mirrors between left and right hand drive markets, which is worth knowing if you are reading a foreign review.

Choosing a length

The run matters, not the car. Park as you normally would, walk the distance from the charge point to the socket, and add a metre or two. That number is what to order.

A nose-charging Leaf parked head in against a wall box is the shortest run on the site, and five metres is comfortable. Reverse the same car onto the same driveway and you need most of ten.
