Three packs across the life of the car

The 2019 car holds 42.5 kWh usable from a 44.5 kWh pack and does 163 miles. The 2022 Standard Range is 49 kWh usable for 198 miles, and the Long Range 68.3 kWh usable for 273. MG's own figure for the onboard charger is up to 7 kW, and MG quotes ten and a half hours for a full charge on the Long Range at that rate.

Every one of them is single phase. EV Database lists an optional 11 kW three phase charger on the Long Range; no UK source supports it and MG's own press material does not mention it, so this page works to MG's figure. A bigger cable cannot change this, because the limit sits in the car rather than the lead.

How long a full charge takes

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 42.5 kWh battery Empty to full, 49 kWh battery Empty to full, 68.3 kWh battery Range added per hour
    Type 2 to Type 2, 32A at 7 kW 7.0 kW 6 hours 45 mins 8 hours 11 hours about 24 miles
    Type 2 to Type 2, 16A at 3.7 kW 3.7 kW 13 hours 15 hours 20 hours 45 mins about 13 miles
    Type 2 to 3 Pin from a socket 2.3 kW 21 hours 24 hours 33 hours 30 mins about 8 miles

Hours are worked from battery size against power drawn, plus a 13 per cent allowance for what is lost as heat, rounded to fifteen minutes. The range column is deliberately cautious, at 3.5 miles per kWh. Our calculated figure for the Long Range and MG's published ten and a half hours land in the same place, which is a reasonable check on both.

DC rapid charging peaks around 76 kW according to MG, and EV Database quotes 94 kW on the Long Range. An independent charging test on the original 44.5 kWh car measured 76 kW, briefly, which is the sort of detail that tells you the honest figure is the lower one.

Which length for a ZS EV

The socket is behind the MG badge in the grille, dead centre in the nose. It is one of the easier cars on this site to buy a cable for: no side to establish, no difference between left and right hand drive, and nose-in parking puts the inlet as close to the charge point as it can get.

The ZS is 4.3 metres long. Nose in and 5 metres is comfortable. Reverse onto the drive and the lead runs the length of the car, which is 10 metres. Bays where you cannot choose your approach are also 10 metre territory. Work it out from where the car genuinely sits, not where it could sit, and leave slack.

    How these cables are built

The cable meets IEC 62196-2, carries the CE mark, is sealed to IP55 and is specified from -30C to +50C.

The three pin version is an IEC 62752 unit, CE marked and IP67 sealed, specified -30C to +60C. Two years of manufacturer warranty, free next working day shipping anywhere in the UK, and a month to change your mind.

MG ZS EV charging cable questions

What cable does an MG ZS EV use?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable at 32A. MG rates the onboard charger at up to 7 kW single phase, so a 32A lead delivers everything the car will take.

Where is the charge port on a ZS EV?

Behind the MG badge in the front grille, in the centre of the nose. The badge panel hinges to reveal both the AC and DC connectors.

How long does a ZS EV take to charge at home?

MG quotes ten and a half hours for the 72.6 kWh Long Range at 7 kW. The 51.1 kWh car is nearer eight and three quarter hours and the original 44.5 kWh car about seven and a half.

Is the three phase cable worth it?

No. Every UK ZS EV is single phase, so a three phase lead would deliver the same 7 kW as the cheaper single phase one.
