    Two generations that differ in both things that matter

    The 2020 to 2024 HS Plug-in carries 16.6 kWh and 32 miles of WLTP electric range. The car that replaced it in late 2024 carries 24.7 kWh and 75 miles. Between them the charger changed and the charge port moved to the other side of the car, so it is worth knowing which one you have before you order anything.

    On the earlier car, SAIC's own European press release gives the onboard charger as 3.7 kW, with a full charge in about four and a half hours. MG UK marketing said up to 7 kW, and owners charging on 7 kW wallboxes report four to four and a quarter hours, which is the 3.7 kW answer rather than the 7 kW one. So a 32A cable buys an early HS owner nothing at all. Spending more on the lead changes nothing, as the car sets the rate.

    Hours come from dividing the pack by the power the car actually draws, with 13 per cent added for losses. The 16.6 kWh column is the 2020 to 2024 car, which cannot use the top row. The 24.7 kWh column is the late-2024 car, which can: MG quotes about four hours twelve for a full charge on an AC point, which implies roughly 6.6 kW and is what the top row reflects. MG has not published a plain kW figure for it, so treat the newer car's speed as approximate.

    Neither generation has DC capability. There is no CCS socket on an HS Plug-in, so rapid chargers are of no use and the Type 2 lead is the only way charge ever reaches the battery. On a used car with no cable in the boot, the electric side simply does not work until one arrives.

    Which length, and check which side first

    This one genuinely catches people out. On the 2020 to 2024 car the charge port is on the rear offside, the right of the body, opposite a fuel filler on the left. On the late-2024 car MG moved the fuel filler to the right and the charge port to the rear nearside, the left. MG's own owner's manual for the newer car states the charging port door is at the rear left.

    So the same model name gives you opposite answers. Look at your own car, then work from where it parks. Port on the same side as the charge point when you reverse in, 5 metres. Anything else on a 4.65 metre SUV, 10 metres. The honest way to choose is to measure the real parking position and allow two metres spare.

    Which cable does an MG HS Plug-in need?

    A 2020 to 2024 car is limited to 3.7 kW, so 16A is all it can use. A late-2024 on car draws around 6.6 kW, so the 32A lead is worth having on that one.

    Does a 7 kW cable charge the older HS faster?

    No. MG UK marketing quoted up to 7 kW, but SAIC's own press material says 3.7 kW and owners on 7 kW wallboxes see four to four and a quarter hours, which confirms the car is the limit.

    Can an MG HS Plug-in use a rapid charger?

    No. Neither generation has a CCS socket or any DC capability, so the Type 2 cable is the only way to charge it.

    Which side is the charge port on?

    It depends on the year. The 2020 to 2024 car charges from the rear offside; the late-2024 on car charges from the rear nearside, with the fuel filler having swapped to the other side.
