Type: EV Charging Cables > Type 2 > Volvo
Inlet type Type 2, AC only
Max onboard AC 3.7 kW, or 6.4 kW across two phases on later cars
On a UK home supply 3.7 kW
Charge port position Front nearside wing
Cable we recommend Type 2 to Type 2, 16A, and 10 metres rather than 5

On this car the only real decision is length

The 6.4 kW upgrade of September 2023 only appears across two or three phases. Volvo states plainly that home charging stays at 3.7 kW, which is the figure that applies on your driveway. A 16A cable is therefore the correct and complete answer on amps, and there is nothing further to weigh up.

Which leaves length, and on a 4.95 metre seven seater that is where the money should go. The XC90 is one of the longest cars on this site and the flap is at the front, so unless you park nose-in with the charge point on your left, the lead has the whole car to travel.

How long a full charge takes

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 14.7 kWh battery Range added per hour
    Type 2 to Type 2, 16A at 3.7 kW 3.7 kW 4 hours 30 mins about 13 miles
Three pin from a 13A socket 2.3 kW 7 hours 15 mins about 8 miles

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. 14.7 kWh usable out of an 18.8 kWh nominal pack, per Volvo's own spec sheet, giving 42 to 44 miles of WLTP electric range. Sources that quote 18.8 kWh as usable are reading the nominal figure.

This car has no DC inlet whatsoever, which puts the whole charging job on the Type 2 lead. A motorway rapid is simply not available to it, and a car that arrives from a dealer with no cable cannot be charged at all until one turns up.

Which length for an XC90 T8

Front nearside wing, on the left of the car. Volvo does not publish it and the corroboration is third party, but every source describing a UK car agrees and it is consistent across the Recharge range.

Nose in with the wall box on the left and 5 metres will do it. Anything else on a car this size and 10 metres is not a luxury, it is the size that works. A long drive or a shared bay is 15 metre territory. Work it out from where the car genuinely sits, not where it could sit, and leave slack.

    How these cables are built

Standards are IEC 62196-2 and CE, protection is IP55, and the specified working range runs -30C to +50C.

The three pin unit is IEC 62752 compliant, CE marked, IP67 against water and rated -30C to +60C. Warranty is two years from the manufacturer, delivery free next working day, returns accepted for 30 days.

Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge charging cable questions

What cable does an XC90 T8 need?

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and we would buy 10 metres on a car this long. The car draws 3.7 kW from a British home supply, so 32A adds nothing.

How long does an XC90 T8 take to charge?

About four and a half hours from empty at 3.7 kW on the 14.7 kWh usable pack.

Can it use a rapid charger?

No. No Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid has a DC socket, so the Type 2 cable is the only way to charge it.

    Should I buy 5 or 10 metres?

Ten, unless you reliably park nose-in with the charge point on the left. The flap is on the front nearside and the car is nearly five metres long, so most parking arrangements need the lead to travel its full length.
