The best electric range in the Recharge family

The S90 T8 Recharge, sold from 2022 to 2024, is quoted at up to 55 miles of WLTP electric range, which is the highest figure in Volvo's plug-in range and comes from the same 18.8 kWh nominal pack the SUVs use. A saloon body and a lower roofline will do that.

Getting near 55 miles takes a light right foot and flat roads, as most reviewers note, but even at forty-odd it is enough that many owners never put petrol in during the week. Which makes the cable a piece of daily equipment rather than an accessory.

And the same 3.7 kW ceiling at home

Volvo publishes the awkward number itself. The 6.4 kW charger introduced in September 2023 wants two or three phases, and on a one phase supply the car settles at 3.7 kW. A bigger cable cannot change this, because the limit sits in the car rather than the lead.

Volvo's published times for this car are around five hours from a wall box and eight from a domestic socket. Those are worth noticing, because they only make sense against a 3.7 kW ceiling: at 7.4 kW a 14.7 kWh pack would be done in well under three.

How long a full charge takes

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 14.7 kWh battery Range added per hour
    Type 2 to Type 2, 16A at 3.7 kW 3.7 kW 4 hours 30 mins about 13 miles
Three pin from a 13A socket 2.3 kW 7 hours 15 mins about 8 miles

Each figure is the pack size divided by the power actually drawn, with 13 per cent added for charging losses and the result rounded to the quarter hour. 14.7 kWh usable from an 18.8 kWh nominal pack. Several sources quote the nominal figure as usable, which is why published charge times for this car vary by about a quarter.

Rapid chargers are irrelevant here, because there is no DC connector to plug them into. The Type 2 cable does all of the work, which is why a missing one on a used car is a bigger problem than most buyers expect.

Which length for an S90 T8

The port is on the front nearside wing. DrivingElectric states nearside front wing for the UK car directly, which is the clearest single source we have for the position across the Recharge range.

The S90 is 5.09 metres long, which is the longest body in this family. Nose in with the charge point on the left and 5 metres works. Any other arrangement and the lead has more than five metres of car to get round, so 10 metres. Park the car where it normally lives, walk the run with a tape, and buy the next size up from what you measure.

    How these cables are built

The cable meets IEC 62196-2, carries the CE mark, is sealed to IP55 and is specified from -30C to +50C.

Three pin construction follows IEC 62752, CE marked, IP67 rated, usable from -30C to +60C. It carries a two year manufacturer's warranty, ships free on next working day delivery, and can go back inside 30 days.

Volvo S90 T8 Recharge charging cable questions

What cable does an S90 T8 need?

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Volvo limits home charging to 3.7 kW on this car, so a 32A cable would take exactly as long.

How far will it go on electric?

Up to 55 miles WLTP, the highest figure in Volvo's plug-in range, though real-world driving lands nearer forty.

How long does a full charge take?

Volvo quotes about five hours from a wall box and eight from a domestic three pin socket, which matches the 3.7 kW ceiling.

Can an S90 T8 rapid charge?

No. There is no DC socket, so the Type 2 lead is the only way the battery ever refills, even at a rapid charging site.
