The badge changes the range, not the charging

This is the one Volvo plug-in where the badge on the boot makes a real difference to how you use it. The V60 T6 Recharge is quoted at up to 54 miles of WLTP electric range and the T8 at up to 37, from the same 18.8 kWh nominal pack, because the T8 puts more of it through a bigger petrol engine and heavier running gear.

Neither figure changes the cable. Both cars carry 14.7 kWh usable and both are limited to the same charge rate, so the decision below is identical whichever you have.

3.7 kW at a British house, and Volvo says so

The limit comes from Volvo rather than from us. Its 2024 spec sheets describe a two phase 6.4 kW charger and add, in brackets, that home charging is capped at 3.7 kW.

There is a genuine disagreement in print about this car specifically, and it is worth knowing which side to believe. One outlet states the V60 has the 6.4 kW charger as standard and will fill on a 7.4 kW home wallbox in three hours. That cannot be true if 6.4 kW needs two phases, and the figures that do hold together are the quieter ones: roughly two and a half hours from a 3.7 kW wall box and six from a three pin socket, on 14.7 kWh usable. The ceiling is the car, so a heavier cable finishes at the same time.

How long a full charge takes

Hours are worked from battery size against power drawn, plus a 13 per cent allowance for what is lost as heat, rounded to fifteen minutes. 14.7 kWh usable from an 18.8 kWh nominal pack, a figure Carbuyer and Volvo's own spec sheet agree on independently.

There is no rapid charging on this one, and no socket that could offer it. Every kilowatt hour it ever receives comes down the Type 2 cable, so the lead is a functional part of the car rather than something kept in the boot for emergencies.

Which length for a V60 Recharge

Front nearside wing, on the left of the car, consistent across Volvo's plug-in range. Volvo does not publish it, so if 5 metres would be marginal for you it is worth a look before ordering.

The V60 is 4.76 metres as an estate. Nose in with the wall box on the left and 5 metres reaches. Reverse in, which is what estate owners tend to do when loading, and the cable has the length of the car to cover, so 10 metres. The measurement that counts is the one taken with the car in its usual spot, plus a margin for the slack the lead needs.

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 lead, whether it is a T6 or a T8. Home charging is limited to 3.7 kW on both, so a 32A cable finishes no sooner.
