Volvo puts the limit in writing, so we will quote it

Volvo's own model year 2024 XC60 specification sheet lists the charger as "2 Phase On Board Charger - 6.4kW (home charging limited to 3.7kW)". That bracket in the middle is the most useful thing any manufacturer has written about any car on this site, and it settles the cable question outright.

So the car draws 3.7 kW on your driveway whether it left the factory with the old charger or the new one. A bigger cable cannot change this, because the limit sits in the car rather than the lead. A 16A cable delivers every watt of that, and the difference in price is better spent on getting the length right.

How long a full charge takes

Those times come from dividing the pack by the delivered power and adding 13 per cent for losses, then rounding to the quarter hour. The pack is 18.8 kWh nominal and 14.7 kWh usable, and it is worth being clear about which number is which: a lot of sources quote 18.8 as usable, which overstates charge times by about a quarter.

There is no 7.4 kW row and no 22 kW row on this table, and if you see one elsewhere for this car it is wrong. Neither is reachable from a single phase supply, so a table that lists them is describing a charge the car cannot accept.

No part of this car accepts DC, so rapid charging is off the table entirely. Charging happens through the Type 2 socket or it does not happen, and that makes the cable the one accessory the car genuinely cannot manage without.

Which length for an XC60 Recharge

The charging flap is on the front nearside wing. Volvo does not publish this itself, but UK reviewers describing right hand drive cars agree on the nearside front, and it matches the rest of Volvo's plug-in range.

The XC60 is 4.71 metres. Nose in with the charge point on the left and 5 metres is comfortable. Reverse in, or a wall box on the offside, and the lead runs the length of the car, so 10 metres. Measure from the charge point to the inlet as the car actually parks, then add two metres of slack.

What cable does an XC60 Recharge need?

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Volvo's own spec sheet limits home charging to 3.7 kW on this car, so a 32A cable would finish at exactly the same time.

What about the 6.4 kW charger on later cars?

It needs two or three AC phases. Volvo states in the same document that home charging stays limited to 3.7 kW, so on a single phase British supply it changes nothing.

Can an XC60 Recharge rapid charge?

No. There is no DC socket on any Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid, so the Type 2 cable is the only way charge reaches the battery.

How long does a full charge take?

About four and a half hours from empty at 3.7 kW on the 14.7 kWh usable pack. From a three pin socket allow around seven.
