A used-car purchase, and a cable that usually went missing

The V90 T6 Recharge was sold new from 2022 to 2024 and is not in the range any more, which means practically everybody reading this is buying for a car that has already changed hands at least once. That is the common thread on the pages we get asked about most: the original three pin lead went into a shed somewhere and the car arrived without one.

It matters more on this car than on a battery electric one. A V90 Recharge cannot take DC at any speed from any post, so there is no motorway workaround and no borrowing a tethered lead at a rapid site. Without a Type 2 cable in the boot the electric half of the car is inert and you are driving a heavy petrol estate.

One honest caveat about the figures below

The limit comes from Volvo rather than from us. Its 2024 spec sheets describe a two phase 6.4 kW charger and add, in brackets, that home charging is capped at 3.7 kW. So 16A is the cable, and that part is not in doubt. What we cannot give you with the same confidence is the V90's own pack size: the 11.6 kWh and 31 to 36 mile figures in wide circulation belong to the pre-2022 car and are being recycled for the newer one, and Volvo's published 14.7 kWh usable is stated for the V90's siblings rather than for the V90 itself.

Which changes our estimate of the hours and nothing about the purchase, because charge rate comes from the supply and the onboard charger while pack size only sets how long it runs. A bigger cable cannot change this, because the limit sits in the car rather than the lead.

Hours, on the best figures available

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 14.7 kWh battery Range added per hour
    Type 2 to Type 2, 16A at 3.7 kW 3.7 kW 4 hours 30 mins about 13 miles
Three pin from a 13A socket 2.3 kW 7 hours 15 mins about 8 miles

Times below are computed from the pack size and the power drawn with 13 per cent allowed for charging losses. The table assumes the 14.7 kWh usable pack its siblings carry. If yours turns out to be an earlier car with the smaller battery, every figure here is an overestimate rather than an underestimate, which is the right way round for a cable purchase.

Buying the right length for a big estate

Front nearside wing, matching the rest of the range. As with the other Recharge models Volvo does not publish the side, and we would rather you glanced at the car than took our word for it if the choice is marginal.

The V90 is 4.94 metres, so this is a big estate and the port is at the front. Nose in with the charge point on the left and 5 metres does it; anything else and 10 metres is the size that actually works. Take a tape measure to the run, inlet to charge point, and add a couple of metres before choosing.

    How these cables are built

It is a CE marked IEC 62196-2 cable, IP55 against the weather, rated to work between -30C and +50C.

The three pin unit is IEC 62752 compliant, CE marked, IP67 against water and rated -30C to +60C. Backed by a two year manufacturer's warranty, with free next working day delivery and a 30 day return window.

Volvo V90 Recharge charging cable questions

What cable does a V90 Recharge need?

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Every Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid is limited to 3.7 kW on a single phase British supply, so a 32A cable adds nothing.

Why are the battery figures on this page hedged?

Because current-generation V90 figures are not properly published and most sources are repeating the pre-2022 car's numbers. We would rather say so than quote a figure borrowed from a different model.

Can a V90 Recharge rapid charge?

No. There is no DC socket on any Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid, so the Type 2 cable is the only way to charge it.

    Should I buy 5 or 10 metres?

Ten, unless you park nose-in with the charge point on your left. The V90 is nearly five metres long and the flap is on the front nearside.
