Look up your {M} and read across

Look up the model rather than reading down the page. The last column names the cable, the third tells you what the car will actually draw at home, and the link takes you to the rest.

Six models, all Type 2, and the division is sharp. The two battery electrics take 7.4 kW; every iV plug-in hybrid on this page is held near 3.6 to 4 kW by its own onboard charger.

What the third column means

Read the third column rather than the brochure. A domestic supply in this country is one phase, and a 32 amp charge point on it works out at roughly 7.4 kW. Anything quoted higher is counting phases you do not have; anything quoted lower is the car holding itself back.

Where the {M} range divides

The Enyaq and Elroq reach 7.4 kW, and a 32 amp cable carries all of it. The Octavia iV, Superb iV, Kodiaq iV and the little Citigo-e iV sit between 3.6 and 4 kW, and anything larger simply waits on the car.

The Citigo-e iV is worth a paragraph of its own because it is the one people assume is faulty. Its charger is rated 7.2 kW, but it is a two phase design taking 16 amps from each phase, and a British house supplies one phase. The car therefore draws about 3.6 kW and a 7 kW charge point is half wasted on it. Owners have taken these cars to dealers over it and found nothing wrong, because there is nothing wrong.

One genuine exception across the whole plug-in hybrid category: the Kodiaq iV has a CCS rapid charging socket at 50 kW. Almost no plug-in hybrid does, so if your Skoda is a Kodiaq iV you have a motorway option that an Octavia iV owner does not.

Port position follows the group rule without exception here: MEB battery electrics at the rear offside, iV plug-in hybrids at the front nearside.

How long a cable you need

The only reliable way is to measure it. Where the charge point is, where the flap ends up, and the path between them, then pick the next size up.

An Enyaq with a rear offside socket usually wants ten metres. A front nearside iV parked nose in with the charge point on the kerb side is the five metre case.

Build quality, warranty and delivery

One specification runs through every lead here. Moulded IP67 heads, tinned copper conductors, a jacket rated well below freezing, and a two year warranty, with free next working day delivery as standard.

Why does my Citigo-e iV only charge at 3.6 kW?

Its 7.2 kW charger is a two phase design taking 16 amps per phase, and a British house supplies one phase. Nothing is faulty and no setting changes it.

Can any Skoda plug-in hybrid rapid charge?

Only the Kodiaq iV, which has a 50 kW CCS socket. That makes it almost unique among plug-in hybrids.

What does an Enyaq charge at on a home wallbox?

Roughly 7.4 kW, because a house supplies one phase and a 32 amp charge point on it reaches that figure and no more.

Is a 16A lead enough for an Octavia iV?

Yes. Its onboard charger is around 3.6 kW, so a 16A cable already covers everything it can draw.
