Which charger you have depends on the year
This is one manufacturer where a bigger charger did not buy British owners much. The 7.2 kW single phase unit already took everything a 32 amp home point could give. Replacing it with an 11 kW three phase unit raised the ceiling in Germany and left it where it was here, at about 7.4 kW.
In practice: the 2014 to 2017 S E-Hybrid had 3.6 kW as standard with 7.2 kW optional. The 2018 to 2020 car repeated that, except the Turbo S E-Hybrid which got 7.2 kW as standard. The 2021 to 2023 cars moved to 7.2 kW, and the 2024 facelift brought the 11 kW three phase unit.
No Cayenne E-Hybrid can rapid charge
No part of this car accepts DC, so rapid charging is off the table entirely. Charging happens through the Type 2 socket or it does not happen, and that makes the cable the one accessory the car genuinely cannot manage without.
This applies to every generation, including the current one with its 25.9 kWh battery. Porsche has never fitted a CCS socket to a Cayenne plug-in hybrid, which makes the Type 2 lead the only route electricity takes into the pack.
Batteries have grown considerably
The pack went 10.8 kWh in 2014, 14.1 in 2018, 17.9 in 2021 and 25.9 gross with 21.8 usable in 2024. WLTP electric range on the current car is 45 to 52 miles depending on version, against 25 to 27 on the 17.9 kWh cars. The earlier ones were homologated on NEDC and no reliable WLTP figure exists for them.
At 21.8 kWh usable and 7.4 kW the current car takes about three hours to fill from empty, which is an evening rather than a night. Porsche quotes 2 hours 39 minutes, but that figure assumes the three phase supply the car cannot get at a British house.

Each figure is the pack size divided by the power actually drawn, with 13 per cent added for charging losses and the result rounded to the quarter hour. Miles per hour is worked at 3.5 miles per kWh, a figure that survives a cold morning. Worked from the 21.8 kWh usable figure of the current car; earlier packs are smaller and correspondingly quicker.
Which length for a Cayenne
The socket is on the nearside rear quarter and Porsche fixes it there by design rather than by market. Its parts catalogue lists one charging port part number for the current car with "Positions: Left, Rear Left", which is the same component on every car regardless of steering side. The fuel filler is on the opposite flank.
The charge flap sits on the nearside rear wing, in the place a fuel filler would normally live. That is the kerb side of the car in Britain, at the back, so reversing in is what brings it close to a wall box near the house. At 4.9 metres and with a rear socket, ten metres is the default here and five only suits a reverse in parking arrangement. Choose on the real distance from inlet to charge point, not the distance on the drawing, and never buy it tight.
How these cables are built
Built to IEC 62196-2 and CE marked, with an IP55 rating that covers rain and dust on an exposed driveway, and a working range of -30C to +50C.
The three pin cable is built to IEC 62752, CE marked, sealed to IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C. Warranty is two years from the manufacturer, delivery free next working day, returns accepted for 30 days.

Can a Cayenne E-Hybrid rapid charge?
No. There is no DC inlet on any generation. The Type 2 lead is the only way to charge it.
Which onboard charger does my car have?
Broadly: 3.6 kW standard on 2014 to 2020 cars with 7.2 kW optional, 7.2 kW from 2021, and 11 kW three phase from the 2024 facelift.
Does the 11 kW charger help at home?
Barely. It is a three phase unit, so on a British single phase supply it gives 7.4 kW, almost the same as the older 7.2 kW single phase charger.
Where is the charge socket?
Nearside rear quarter panel, opposite the fuel filler. Porsche uses the same part on left and right hand drive cars.
