The port has moved sides

If you already own a Jaecoo 7, or you are reading its page alongside this one, note the difference: the Jaecoo 8's charge socket is on the nearside rear, where the 7's is on the offside. Chery's own right hand drive specification sheet records it as passenger side rear, and the same layout appears on the closely related Omoda 9.

Being on the nearside is a small everyday advantage at a kerbside charge point, since the socket faces the pavement. On a driveway it simply means measuring to the left hand rear corner, and on a 4.8 metre SUV that is a difference of a couple of metres against the other car in the range.

A much bigger battery on the same charger

The 6.6 kW rating is a single phase rating, which means it is also the rating you get at home. About 29 amps at 230 volts is comfortably within a domestic supply, so this car is as quick on a driveway as it is anywhere else in the country.

The interesting part is what that charger is attached to. Where the Jaecoo 7 carries 18.4 kWh, the 8 carries 34.46 kWh at 322 volts, with a pack weight of 228 kg, for 83 miles of electric range WLTP. Jaecoo UK quotes a full charge in 5.5 hours, which divides out at 6.27 kW and confirms the 6.6 kW rating on a much larger pack.

One figure on Jaecoo's own page should be ignored. It lists an AC charging time of 20 minutes for 30 to 80 per cent alongside an identical DC figure. Half of a 34.46 kWh battery in twenty minutes would need 51.7 kW on alternating current, eight times what the car can take, so that row is a duplicated DC value. The valid AC figure on the same page is the 5.5 hour one.

Rapid charging and vehicle-to-load

DC charging is 70 kW, with thirty to eighty per cent in twenty minutes per Jaecoo UK and twenty-five on the export sheet. Both are consistent with a 70 kW peak. On a battery this size a twenty minute stop is genuinely useful rather than decorative.

Vehicle-to-load is 6.6 kW, which is double the Jaecoo 7's figure and enough to run real tools rather than a kettle. Battery chemistry is disputed between the official sheet and the UK press, so we will leave it out rather than pick a side.

How long a full charge takes

Those times come from dividing the pack by the delivered power and adding 13 per cent for losses, then rounding to the quarter hour. Miles per hour is worked at 3.5 miles per kWh, a figure that survives a cold morning. Jaecoo publishes one unlabelled capacity figure with no gross or usable split, so the table uses 34.46 kWh as given.

Six and a half hours is a night rather than an evening, which is the price of 83 miles of electric range in a plug-in hybrid. On a cheap overnight tariff that is a lot of very inexpensive driving. The ceiling is the car, so a heavier cable finishes at the same time.

Which length for a Jaecoo 8

Measure to the nearside rear corner. The Jaecoo 8 is a large SUV at 4.8 metres, priced from 45,500, and with a socket at the back it is a ten metre car on most driveways.

Fifteen metres suits a detached garage or a charge point on the far side of the house. Five metres only works where the car reverses in and the wall box sits beside that rear corner. Park the car where it normally lives, walk the run with a tape, and buy the next size up from what you measure.

How these cables are built

The lead is an IEC 62196-2 design, CE marked, IP55 sealed against a British winter and rated from -30C to +50C.

The nearside rear, which is the opposite side to the Jaecoo 7. Do not assume a lead that suited one will suit the other.

How fast does a Jaecoo 8 charge at home?

6.6 kW, its full rate, because the charger is single phase. Jaecoo quotes 5.5 hours for a complete charge.

Jaecoo's site says 20 minutes for 30 to 80 per cent on AC. Is that right?

No. That would need 51.7 kW on alternating current, eight times the car's rating. It is a duplicated DC figure. The valid AC figure on the same page is 5.5 hours for a full charge.

How far does it go on electricity?

83 miles WLTP from the 34.46 kWh battery, which is a long electric range for a plug-in hybrid.

Can it rapid charge?

Yes, at 70 kW, thirty to eighty per cent in about twenty minutes.
