    First, check which Jaecoo 7 you have

    Three versions of the Jaecoo 7 are sold in Britain and only one of them plugs in. The SHS-P is the plug-in hybrid and takes a cable. The SHS-H is a self charging hybrid with a 1.83 kWh battery and no charging socket at all, and the 1.6T petrol has no traction battery whatsoever. On Jaecoo's own specification table every charging row for those two is printed as a dash.

    It is an easy mistake to make, because "Jaecoo 7 hybrid" could mean either of two cars and only one of them can be charged. If yours is an SHS-P, read on.

    The rate the car will actually take

    This is one of the cars that loses nothing on a domestic supply. The 6.6 kW charger is single phase by design at roughly 29 amps, well inside what a home charge point provides, so the car takes its full rated power on any ordinary driveway.

    Jaecoo UK states 6.6 kW and quotes 25 to 100 per cent in 160 minutes. That works out at 5.18 kW average across the charge, which fits a 6.6 kW ceiling with normal taper and rules out anything slower. One UK review states the car's peak AC rate as 3.3 kW; that figure is the car's vehicle-to-load output, which Jaecoo lists in the same table, and it has been read as the charging rate. The arithmetic settles it: a 3.3 kW charger would need over four hours, not 160 minutes.

    A bigger cable cannot change this, because the limit sits in the car rather than the lead. So the 32A cable is what unlocks the full 6.6 kW and nothing above that does anything. Vehicle-to-load is 3.3 kW through a three pin socket in the boot.

    Rapid charging, on a plug-in hybrid

    The SHS-P has a real CCS2 socket rated at 40 kW, with thirty to eighty per cent in about twenty minutes. On an 18.4 kWh pack that is half the battery back while you fetch a coffee, and it is more than most plug-in hybrids offer.

    Battery capacity is quoted as 18.3 to 18.4 kWh depending on trim and model year, with no gross or usable split published anywhere, which is normal for this group. Electric range is 56 miles WLTP, matching the 90 km figure on the export specification sheets.

    Times below are computed from the pack size and the power drawn with 13 per cent allowed for charging losses. Miles per hour is worked at a conservative 3.5 miles per kWh. Working from 18.4 kWh with no usable figure published, so real times run slightly shorter than shown.

    Three and a half hours from flat means a single evening on a cheap tariff covers the whole battery, and 56 miles of electric range covers most days without the engine starting. That is the entire argument for a car like this.

    Which length for a Jaecoo 7

    Chery's own right hand drive specification sheet gives the charge port location as driver's side rear, which on a UK car is the offside rear flank, and a UK review independently describes the CCS socket as being in the rear wing. The car is 4.5 metres long.

    Worth saying plainly: the Jaecoo 8 puts its socket on the opposite side, so do not assume one lead suits both. For the 7, ten metres is the sensible default and five works where you reverse in beside the charge point. Work it out from where the car genuinely sits, not where it could sit, and leave slack.

    How these cables are built

    The cable meets IEC 62196-2, carries the CE mark, is sealed to IP55 and is specified from -30C to +50C.

    Jaecoo 7 charging cable questions

    Does every Jaecoo 7 need a charging cable?

    No. Only the SHS-P plug-in hybrid has a charging socket. The SHS-H self charging hybrid and the petrol version have none at all.

    How fast does a Jaecoo 7 SHS-P charge?

    6.6 kW, which is its full rate because the charger is single phase. Jaecoo quotes 25 to 100 per cent in 160 minutes.

    Is it really only 3.3 kW?

    No. That figure is the car's vehicle-to-load output, not its charging rate, and it appears in the same specification table. Jaecoo's own charge time only works at around 6.6 kW.

    Can it rapid charge?

    Yes, at 40 kW on CCS2, thirty to eighty per cent in about twenty minutes. That is generous for a plug-in hybrid.
