    One charger, four batteries, five years

    The Born arrived in late 2021 with a 58 kWh pack and has since been sold with 59, 77 and 79 kWh versions, the last of those also carrying the 326 PS VZ. Quoted range runs from 264 miles on the earliest car to 369 on the VZ. What has not changed in any of it is the charging hardware, which is the standard Volkswagen Group unit shared with the ID.3 and the Skoda Elroq.

    That matters because it means one cable answers the question for every Born ever registered. You do not need to know which battery you have to buy the right lead, and a used car bought without one takes the same cable as a new one.

    The figure that is actually documented

    Three phase power is a factory and workplace thing. On a domestic supply the car settles at 7.4 kW. So buy the 32A single phase lead, and treat any shorter charge time you see quoted as a workplace figure rather than a domestic one.

    There is a nice piece of corroboration on this car. A published technical sheet for the Born states both halves of the specification explicitly: a maximum of 7.4 kW at 32A on a single phase, and a maximum of 11 kW at 16A per phase across three. Most manufacturers give you only the second half and leave the first to be worked out. Here it is on the record, which is why we can be confident rather than merely reasonable about recommending the 32A lead.

    Hours come from dividing the pack by the power the car actually draws, with 13 per cent added for losses. Miles per hour is worked at 3.5 miles per kWh, a figure that survives a cold morning. Columns cover the three current packs; the original 58 kWh car behaves like the 59 for practical purposes.

    DC charging reaches 165 kW on the 59 kWh car and 185 kW on the 79, so a motorway stop is not this cable's job. What the cable does is the other ninety per cent of charging, which happens overnight on a cheap tariff while nobody watches.

    Which length for a Born

    The socket is on the offside rear quarter, above the wheel, which is the family trait of this platform. Reversing onto a driveway brings it close to a wall box mounted near the house; driving in nose first puts it as far away as the car is long.

    The Born is 4.32 metres, so a 5 metre lead is fine if the charge point ends up on the correct side and reasonably near the back of the bay, and 10 metres is the safe answer for anything else. Work it out from where the car genuinely sits, not where it could sit, and leave slack.

    How these cables are built

    The cable meets IEC 62196-2, carries the CE mark, is sealed to IP55 and is specified from -30C to +50C.

    What cable does a Cupra Born need?

    A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. That is true of every Born, from the 2021 58 kWh car through to the 79 kWh VZ, because they all share the same charging hardware.

    How long does a Born take to charge at home?

    About nine hours for the 59 kWh car and twelve for the 79 kWh, from empty at 7.4 kW. An overnight off-peak window covers a normal day's driving several times over.

    Is the 11 kW figure achievable at a house?

    No. It needs three phases, which almost no British home has. On one phase the Born draws 32A, which is 7.4 kW, and the published technical data says so directly.

    Where is the charge port on a Born?

    Offside rear quarter panel, above the rear wheel, in the position a fuel filler would occupy. Measure from your charge point to that corner with the car parked as it normally sits.
