Four Cupras, all Type 2, and the range divides exactly along the electric and plug-in hybrid line. The two battery electrics take more than twice what the two plug-in hybrids can accept.

What changes from model to model

A British house gives one phase, so roughly 7.4 kW is the ceiling however a brochure is worded.

The Born and Tavascan reach 7.4 kW at a British house, and the 32 amp lead is what reaches that figure. The Formentor and Leon e-HYBRID are 3.6 kW cars, and a 16 amp cable covers it completely. There is no middle ground in this range and no model where the year changes the answer, which makes it one of the more straightforward brands here.

Both plug-in hybrids share a charger with the wider group cars of the same era, so a Golf GTE or Octavia iV will feel familiar. Neither has a DC rapid socket, which puts the whole job on the Type 2 lead and makes a missing cable on a used car a real problem rather than an inconvenience.

Cupra never offered a larger AC charger on any of these four, so there is no option box to have missed and no used car in the range that charges faster than another of the same model. That is worth knowing because the Born shares its platform with cars where the charger did change mid-life.

Port position follows the group pattern: the battery electrics charge from the offside rear quarter and the plug-in hybrids from the nearside front wing. On the Tavascan the socket sits above the rear wheel, high enough that a cable resting on the ground has a noticeable run up to it.

Picking a length for your driveway

For length, the honest advice is to take a tape measure to the gap between your charge point and where the car will sit. Five metres is often enough; ten metres is what most driveways want; the longer leads exist for garage mounted units and awkward layouts.

A front nearside plug-in hybrid parked nose in with the charge point on the kerb side is the five metre case. A Tavascan charging from the offside rear with a nearside charge point is the ten metre one, and the high socket above the rear wheel adds a little more.

Build quality, warranty and delivery

Underneath, every lead here is the same product. Tinned copper, sealed IP67 heads moulded in one piece, a sheath that stays supple in the cold, and two years of cover with free next day delivery.

Why is the Formentor e-HYBRID limited to 3.6 kW?

Its onboard charger is rated at 3.6 kW, so the car sets the limit rather than your supply. A 16A lead already covers it.

Can a Cupra plug-in hybrid rapid charge?

No. Neither the Formentor nor the Leon e-HYBRID has a DC socket, so the Type 2 cable is the only way to charge them.
