Check which number you have been given for the battery
The 2024 Tiguan eHybrid is widely quoted at 25.7 kWh. That is the gross figure. The usable capacity is 19.7 kWh, and the difference is about a quarter, which is enough to throw every charge time you calculate from it. The 2021 to 2024 car holds 10.4 kWh usable from a 13 kWh gross pack.
Electric range went from about 31 miles on the older car to about 75 or 76 on the 2024 one, which is the sort of jump that changes how a plug-in gets used day to day.
The older car is simple: 3.6 kW and nothing else
The 2021 to 2024 Tiguan eHybrid has a 3.6 kW single phase onboard charger and no DC socket at all. Volkswagen's own figure is three hours forty from a wall box and five from a household socket, both consistent with that ceiling. The extra amps would simply sit unused, so there is nothing to gain from a bigger cable. So 16A, and spend the saving on length.
There is no rapid charging on this one, and no socket that could offer it. Every kilowatt hour it ever receives comes down the Type 2 cable, so the lead is a functional part of the car rather than something kept in the boot for emergencies. That applies to the 2021 to 2024 car; the 2024 one did gain a CCS socket at 40 to 50 kW.
The 2024 car, and an honest gap in the data
The 2024 Tiguan eHybrid is quoted at up to 11 kW on AC. Volkswagen publishes a twelve hour household socket figure and a two and a half hour figure on an 11 kW wallbox, and nothing for a single phase wall box, which is what almost every British house has. The technical data tables have the same hole in them.
The identical 19.7 kWh drivetrain in the Skoda Kodiaq iV is reported by Skoda's own technical support at about 4 kW from one phase, and a 2021 Volkswagen briefing on this driveline said the AC rate was not being lifted above the old 3.6 kW. On balance we would expect 16A to be enough. We are not going to state it as fact when the manufacturer will not, so if the price difference matters to you, ask a dealer what the single phase rate is.

Hours come from dividing the pack by the power the car actually draws, with 13 per cent added for losses. Columns are the 2021 to 2024 car and the 2024 car at their usable capacities, not the gross figures. Only the 2024 car can use the 11 kW row, and only across three phases.
Which length for a Tiguan
The flap is at the front. Technical data written for left hand drive cars puts it on the left of the body, and we have not found confirmation either way for a UK Tiguan, so take a look before ordering if 5 metres would be tight.
The Tiguan is 4.54 metres. A front port means nose-in parking is the easy case at 5 metres. Reverse onto the drive and the lead comes the length of the car, so 10 metres. Pace it out from the socket to the flap with the car parked as it always is, then allow a little extra.

Which cable does a Tiguan eHybrid need?
A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 lead for a 2021 to 2024 car, which caps at 3.6 kW. On the 2024 car Volkswagen does not publish a single phase figure, so we cannot promise a 32A cable would help.
Is the 2024 battery 25.7 kWh?
That is the gross figure. Usable capacity is 19.7 kWh, about a quarter less, so charge times worked out from 25.7 come out too long.
Can a Tiguan eHybrid rapid charge?
Only the 2024 car, which has CCS at 40 to 50 kW. The 2021 to 2024 car has no DC socket, so the Type 2 cable is its only route.
How long does the older car take to charge?
About three and three quarter hours from empty at 3.6 kW on its 10.4 kWh usable pack, which matches Volkswagen's own figure.
