    Both batteries grew for 2026

    The original range was a 52 kWh usable Pure at 224 miles, a 77 kWh Pro at 331 miles, and a 77 kWh GTX at 316. For the 2026 model year Volkswagen lifted the Pure to 58 kWh usable and 271 miles, and the Pro to 79 kWh and 354 miles. Same charging hardware, more of it to fill.

    As on the ID.3, the entry car is the odd one: the early Pure's 7.2 kW charger is capped at 7.2 kW on one phase or three, while Pro and GTX carry an 11 kW three phase unit. A car quoted at 11 kW or 22 kW is quoting a three phase figure, and a single phase British house will give it 7.4 kW. So every ID.4 lands between 7.2 and 7.4 kW at a British house and a 32A cable suits all of them.

    Those times come from dividing the pack by the delivered power and adding 13 per cent for losses, then rounding to the quarter hour. Miles per hour is worked at a conservative 3.5 miles per kWh. Columns are the original Pure, the 77 kWh Pro and GTX, and the 2026 Pro at 79 kWh usable.

    Twelve hours from genuinely empty on the larger packs sounds long until you notice that a seven hour off peak window still moves about 180 miles into the car, which is more than most people use in a week.

    Which length for an ID.4

    Rear offside, on the right hand rear flank. The ID.4 is the car where we can point at direct confirmation that the position does not mirror: an owner thread asking exactly this question got the answer that it is on the right rear fender regardless of market, and Zapmap describes it as the offside rear flank for UK cars. Both agree.

    The ID.4 is 4.58 metres. Reverse in with the charge point on the right and 5 metres does it. Nose in, which many people do on a driveway, and the lead goes round the whole car, so 10 metres. Take a tape measure to the run, inlet to charge point, and add a couple of metres before choosing.

    How these cables are built

    It is made to IEC 62196-2, CE marked, and sealed to IP55 across a -30C to +50C temperature range.

    On the three pin side the standard is IEC 62752, with CE marking, IP67 sealing and a -30C to +60C range. Warranty is two years from the manufacturer, delivery free next working day, returns accepted for 30 days.

    What cable does an ID.4 need?

    A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Pro and GTX draw 7.4 kW from a British home supply and the early Pure 7.2 kW, both inside what a 32A lead carries.

    How long does an ID.4 take to charge at home?

    About eight hours for the 52 kWh Pure, eleven and three quarters for the 77 kWh Pro, and twelve for the 2026 Pro at 79 kWh, from empty at 7.4 kW.

    Did the 2026 cars change?

    Yes, both packs grew: the Pure from 52 to 58 kWh usable and the Pro from 77 to 79, taking WLTP range to 271 and 354 miles. Charging hardware and port position are unchanged.

    Where is the charge port?

    The rear offside, on the right hand rear flank, and it is confirmed to sit there in every market rather than mirroring for right hand drive.
