Use the table first. It lists every model in the range against the lead it needs, so most visitors can order from it without reading another word.

Four models, and one of them needs the year checking before you order anything. The Prius Plug-in changed connector partway through its life, from Type 1 on the 2012 to 2016 car to Type 2 from 2017.

If the year on the V5 does not settle it, count the pins. Type 1 is five pins in a round housing with the latch on the plug. Type 2 is seven pins with one flat edge. No adaptor converts one to the other, and a Type 2 lead will not physically enter a Type 1 inlet.

The Prius product page carries both cable types for exactly this reason, so the right one is a click away. The 2012 to 2016 car takes about 2.2 kW and later cars 3.3 kW, and no generation has a DC socket despite a DC charging time appearing in Toyota's own 2024 brochure.

Toyota 6.6 kW chargers are single phase, which is good news

A British house gives one phase, so roughly 7.4 kW is the ceiling however a brochure is worded.

This is the one brand where a figure below 7.4 kW is close to an advantage. Three of these cars, the two plug-in hybrids and the launch bZ4X, carry 6.6 kW single phase chargers, and a British house delivers every watt. Toyota says so itself about the RAV4: a 32 amp Mode 3 cable and a wall box recharge it in about two and a half hours "with no impact on the customer domestic power supply".

Against an 11 kW three phase car, which arrives at 7.4 kW here, the real gap is twelve per cent rather than the forty the ratings imply.

What changes from model to model

The bZ4X goes by build date rather than badge: launch cars have the 6.6 kW single phase unit, cars from late 2022 an 11 kW three phase one, and the 2025 High grade 22 kW. At a house those land at 6.6, 7.4 and 7.4 kW, so the 22 kW option buys nothing.

This is a range where the socket genuinely moves about, so the length you need depends on which model you have. The pages below give the position for each. The bZ4X charges from the nearside front wing, which is unusual and helpful. The RAV4 uses the offside rear. The Prius moved from offside rear to nearside rear at the 2023 car. For the C-HR plug-in hybrid Toyota does not document the position anywhere we would trust, and we say so rather than guess.

Getting the length right

A length is easy to get right and annoying to get wrong. Measure from the charge point to where the flap will be, allow for routing round a wheel rather than under it, and round up.

The bZ4X nearside front socket is the easy case: nose in with the charge point on the kerb side and five metres reaches.

Is the Toyota Prius Plug-in Type 1 or Type 2?

Both, depending on year. The 2012 to 2016 car is Type 1 and cars from 2017 are Type 2. The product page carries both cable types so you can pick from one listing.

Is a 6.6 kW Toyota slow at home?

No, and it is arguably the better arrangement. The charger is single phase, so a British house gives it all 6.6 kW, where an 11 kW three phase car only reaches 7.4.

Can any Prius Plug-in rapid charge?

No generation has a DC inlet, despite a DC charging time appearing in Toyota own 2024 brochure. That row is a template error.
