Charging your EV3 at home

Kia fits the same 11 kW AC charger to both batteries, the 55 kWh Standard Range and the 78 kWh Long Range, so the cable choice does not change with the spec. Kia's own UK figures of 5 hours 20 and 7 hours 15 are quoted against an 11 kW three phase charger.

The 7.4 kW ceiling is the house, not the cable: three phase ratings only mean something where three phases arrive. On a home wall box the EV3 draws 7.4 kW and the 32A single phase cable hands it over in full, which is why that is the lead to buy.

The port is at the front, on the offside

Worth knowing before you choose a length, because it is not where most people expect. The EV3 charges through the offside front wing, the side away from the kerb and towards the front of the car, rather than the rear quarter panel most rivals use.

Park nose in with the wall box on the offside and 5 metres is generous. Reverse onto the drive and the socket ends up at the far end of the car from the charger, which pushes you to 10 metres. Kerbside charging on a UK street puts the inlet on the traffic side, so take 10 metres there too.

How long a full charge takes

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. Up to 270 miles WLTP on the Standard Range and 375 on the Long Range, depending on trim. Miles per hour is worked at a conservative 3.5 miles per kWh.

How long does a Kia EV3 take to charge at home?

Which side is the EV3 charging socket on?

Is the 22kW three phase cable worth buying?

Not for home use. The car caps at 11 kW anyway, and a single phase house delivers 7.4 kW through any cable. If you charge at a three phase workplace post regularly, the three phase lead saves a few hours on a Long Range.

Does the Kia EV3 come with a charging cable?
