Two batteries, one charging spec

Urban Range carries 40 kWh usable for 192 miles WLTP, Comfort Range 52 kWh for 252 miles, and Renault fits the same 11 kW AC charger to both. So the battery you chose changes how long a charge takes and nothing about which cable to buy.

British homes are supplied with one phase, so an 11 kW or 22 kW car rating lands at 7.4 kW on the driveway. There is a second reason the Type 2 lead matters more on some cars than others here: DC rapid charging is trim dependent. Renault lists it on Evolution, Techno+, Iconic Five+ and Roland-Garros+, which leaves the entry trims relying entirely on AC.

How long a full charge takes

Times below are computed from the pack size and the power drawn with 13 per cent allowed for charging losses. The range column assumes 3.5 miles per kWh rather than a summer best case. Columns are the 40 kWh Urban Range and the 52 kWh Comfort Range. A seven hour overnight window at 7.4 kW is worth roughly 180 miles, which on the Urban Range is most of the battery.

Which length for a Renault 5

Renault's own manual confirms the charging connections are at the front of the car. Independent spec databases place the flap on the left of the nose, the nearside on a UK car, and being a front position it is fixed to the body rather than mirrored. Renault itself does not publish the side, so if 5 metres is going to be tight for you, take a look before ordering.

The car is 3.92 metres long, which is short enough that a front port and nose-in parking make 5 metres comfortable. Reverse onto a drive and 10 metres is the safer buy. Pace it out from the socket to the flap with the car parked as it always is, then allow a little extra.

How these cables are built

It is a CE marked IEC 62196-2 cable, IP55 against the weather, rated to work between -30C and +50C.

What cable does a Renault 5 E-Tech need?

A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The car accepts 11 kW on three phase, and a UK single phase home supply turns that into 7.4 kW.

How long does a Renault 5 take to charge?

From empty at 7.4 kW, roughly six hours for the 40 kWh Urban Range and about eight for the 52 kWh Comfort Range. Both accept the same power, so only the pack size differs.

Does every Renault 5 rapid charge?

No. Renault lists DC fast charging on Evolution, Techno+, Iconic Five+ and Roland-Garros+, which means the entry trims charge on AC only and the Type 2 lead is all they have.

Where does the Renault 5 plug in?
