Look up your {M} and read across

Find your model in the table and the last column is your answer. Each row links to that car's own page, where the charge port position, the battery sizes and the charging times are set out in full.

Both Mitsubishis here are Type 1 cars, so both need a Type 2 to Type 1 lead. A Type 2 to Type 2 cable will not physically enter either of them, and no adaptor exists that changes that.

Type 1 with CHAdeMO on the other flank

The two inlets cannot be confused once you have seen both. Type 1 carries five pins in a circular housing and the latch sits on the plug rather than the socket. Type 2 carries seven and has a flat edge across the top. Nothing adapts between them.

Both cars also separate their two sockets. The AC Type 1 flap is on the offside rear and the CHAdeMO flap is on the other side of the car, which means the socket you use every day is not the one a photograph of the rapid charging side will show you. Plan the cable around the AC flap.

Where the {M} range divides

One phase at 32 amps is about 7.4 kW, and that governs the whole table.

Very little. The Outlander PHEV takes about 3.6 kW and the i-MiEV about 3.7, which means a 16 amp lead is not a compromise but a match. A 7 kW charge point brings neither of them any benefit at all over a 16 amp supply, because the limit is the onboard charger rather than the wiring.

The Outlander PHEV is the more significant car commercially: it was the best selling plug-in hybrid in Britain for years and it remains one of the highest-traffic pages we have. A great many owners arrive assuming it is a Type 2 car, which is the misconception this page exists to correct.

The i-MiEV is the platform behind the Peugeot iOn and the Citroen C-Zero, so if you have read about those cars the charging answers carry across directly.

Getting the length right

Err on the generous side. Spare cable coils away in seconds; a lead two feet short is a return.

With the AC socket on the offside rear, a nose-in driveway with a nearside charge point is the longest run. Ten metres is the safe order; five works reversing in on the driver's side.

Is the Outlander PHEV Type 1 or Type 2?

Type 1. It needs a Type 2 to Type 1 lead, and a Type 2 to Type 2 cable will not fit the inlet.

Will a 7 kW charge point charge my Outlander faster?

No. Its onboard charger is about 3.6 kW, so a 16A supply already covers everything the car can draw.

Where are the sockets on an Outlander PHEV?

The AC Type 1 flap is on the offside rear and the CHAdeMO flap is on the opposite flank. Plan the cable length around the AC one.

Is the i-MiEV the same as the Peugeot iOn?

Effectively yes. The iOn and Citroen C-Zero are the same car, so their charging answers carry across.

Which length should I order?

Ten metres is the safe order with an offside rear socket. Five works if you reverse in on the driver side.
