Charging your Outlander PHEV at home
The Outlander is the car that got a generation of British families into plug-in driving, and its charging is refreshingly simple: one AC rate, 3.6 kW, on the 2014 to 2018 car and on the 2019 facelift alike. Nothing you plug into it changes that number.
So the 16A Type 1 to Type 2 cable is the buy. It carries 3.7 kW, which covers the car completely. Nothing is gained by paying for the 32A lead here: the car cannot ask for more current, so the clock reads the same either way. Type 1 is a single phase connector, so three phase does not enter the conversation.
Which length, and which side the port is on
The charging flap is on the offside rear quarter panel, the side away from the kerb, with the fuel filler on the other side. Confirmed in Mitsubishi's own emergency response guides for both generations, including a right hand drive market car, so it does not swap sides on a UK vehicle.
That puts the socket at the back of the car and on the far side from a wall box fitted by the front door. Reverse onto the drive with the charger on the offside and 5 metres reaches. Park nose in, or charge at the kerb, and 10 metres is the one to buy.

What cable do I need for an Outlander PHEV?
The Type 1 to Type 2 lead. The car has the older five pin Type 1 inlet, and home wall boxes and public posts in the UK are Type 2, so the cable bridges the two. Sixteen amps is enough, because the car will not take more than 3.6 kW whatever you plug in.
Is it worth buying the 32A cable for an Outlander PHEV?
No. The limit is the car, not the lead. A 32A cable delivers the same 3.6 kW to an Outlander as the 16A cable does, so the charge takes the same time. Spend the difference on a longer length instead if the drive needs it.
Which side is the charging socket on an Outlander PHEV?
The offside rear quarter panel, away from the kerb when the car is parked facing forwards. The fuel filler is on the nearside. Both the AC and the rapid CHAdeMO sockets sit behind that same outer flap.
How long does an Outlander PHEV take to charge at home?
About four hours from empty on a 3.6 kW supply for the 12 kWh car, and closer to four and a half for the 13.8 kWh facelift. From a three pin socket it is nearer six to seven hours, which still fits comfortably into an overnight window.
Can I use the Outlander PHEV cable at public chargers?
At any untethered Type 2 AC post, yes, which covers most car park and on street charging. Rapid charging on this car is CHAdeMO, and those units have their own cable attached.
