    Charging your i-MiEV at home

The i-MiEV is a small car with a small battery, around 14.5 kWh usable, and that combination makes home charging easy. At 3.7 kW the pack goes from empty to full inside an evening, and most owners are only topping up a few kWh anyway.

One 16A Type 1 to Type 2 cable is all the car needs. It is the cable that connects the five pin inlet to the Type 2 sockets that every modern UK charge point uses.

How long a full charge takes

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 14.5 kWh battery Range added per hour
Type 1 to Type 2, 16A, car limited to 3.7 kW 3.7 kW 4 hours 30 mins about 13 miles
    Type 1 to 3 Pin from a 13A socket 2.3 kW 7 hours about 8 miles

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. The 14.5 kWh figure is a usable estimate rather than a Mitsubishi published number, so treat the times as close rather than exact. The miles column uses 3.5 miles per kWh, which holds up in winter as well as summer.

    Which length to buy

Two flaps, one each side at the back. The one you want at home is the AC flap on the offside rear, confirmed in Mitsubishi's own responder guide. The CHAdeMO socket is on the nearside rear and is only used by rapid chargers, which bring their own cable.

The i-MiEV is a short car, so five metres covers more situations here than it would on a saloon. Ten metres is worth it if the charge point is on the opposite side of the drive or you park on the road.

    How these cables are built

IEC 62196-2 construction, CE marked, IP55 sealed and tested from -30C through to +50C.

On the three pin side the standard is IEC 62752, with CE marking, IP67 sealing and a -30C to +60C range. Warranty is two years from the manufacturer, delivery free next working day, returns accepted for 30 days.

    Mitsubishi i-MiEV charging cable questions

What cable does a Mitsubishi i-MiEV use?

A Type 1 to Type 2 cable for AC charging. The inlet on the car is the older five pin Type 1 connector, and British charge points are Type 2, so this cable joins them. The 16A version covers the car's 3.7 kW limit.

How far does an i-MiEV go on a charge?

The official figure is 93 miles on the old NEDC test, which is optimistic by modern standards. Real world range on a car this age depends heavily on battery health, so treat 93 as the showroom number rather than the one you plan around.

Which side does the i-MiEV charge on?

The AC socket is behind the offside rear flap, away from the kerb. The nearside rear flap is the CHAdeMO rapid socket. It is worth knowing which is which before you buy a cable length.

Can I charge an i-MiEV from a three pin socket?

Yes, with a Type 1 three pin cable. At roughly 2.3 kW a 14.5 kWh pack fills in about seven hours, which makes the granny charger a genuinely practical option on a car this size rather than just an emergency one.
