    Charging your EV3 at home

Kia fits the same 11 kW AC charger to both batteries, the 55 kWh Standard Range and the 78 kWh Long Range, so the cable choice does not change with the spec. Kia's own UK figures of 5 hours 20 and 7 hours 15 are quoted against an 11 kW three phase charger.

The 7.4 kW ceiling is the house, not the cable: three phase ratings only mean something where three phases arrive. On a home wall box the EV3 draws 7.4 kW and the 32A single phase cable hands it over in full, which is why that is the lead to buy.

The port is at the front, on the offside

Worth knowing before you choose a length, because it is not where most people expect. The EV3 charges through the offside front wing, the side away from the kerb and towards the front of the car, rather than the rear quarter panel most rivals use.

Park nose in with the wall box on the offside and 5 metres is generous. Reverse onto the drive and the socket ends up at the far end of the car from the charger, which pushes you to 10 metres. Kerbside charging on a UK street puts the inlet on the traffic side, so take 10 metres there too.

How long a full charge takes

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 55 kWh battery Empty to full, 78 kWh battery Range added per hour
Type 2, 32A single phase at home 7.4 kW 8 hours 30 mins 12 hours about 26 miles
    Type 2, 16A 3.7 kW 16 hours 45 mins 23 hours 45 mins about 13 miles
Type 2, three phase at 11 kW 11.0 kW 5 hours 45 mins 8 hours about 38 miles
    Type 2 to 3 Pin from a socket 2.3 kW 27 hours 38 hours 15 mins about 8 miles

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. Up to 270 miles WLTP on the Standard Range and 375 on the Long Range, depending on trim. Miles per hour is worked at a conservative 3.5 miles per kWh.

    How these cables are built

Construction is to IEC 62196-2 with CE marking, IP55 weather protection and a -30C to +50C operating range.

Three pin construction follows IEC 62752, CE marked, IP67 rated, usable from -30C to +60C. Two year manufacturer's warranty. Delivery is free and next working day, and returns are open for 30 days.

    Kia EV3 charging cable questions

What cable does a Kia EV3 need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 32A single phase for home charging. The car has an 11 kW AC charger as standard, and 7.4 kW is what a single phase British supply can give it.

How long does a Kia EV3 take to charge at home?

From empty at 7.4 kW, roughly eight and a half hours for the 55 kWh Standard Range and about twelve for the 78 kWh Long Range. Kia's faster published figures assume an 11 kW three phase charger, which most UK homes do not have.

Which side is the EV3 charging socket on?

The offside front wing, away from the kerb and near the front of the car. That is unusual, and it is the main reason EV3 owners end up wanting ten metres rather than five.

Is the 22kW three phase cable worth buying?

Not for home use. The car caps at 11 kW anyway, and a single phase house delivers 7.4 kW through any cable. If you charge at a three phase workplace post regularly, the three phase lead saves a few hours on a Long Range.

Does the Kia EV3 come with a charging cable?

Kia's supplied cables vary by trim and market, and a used car often arrives with none. If the boot has only a three pin lead, the Type 2 cable is the one you need for a wall box or a public post.
