    Check which generation you have, because the socket moved

    This matters more than the amperage. The current Range Rover Sport, launched in 2022 as the P440e and P510e and renamed P460e and P550e around 2024, charges from a flap on the rear flank. The previous generation P400e, sold from 2018 to 2022, charges from a flap set flush into the FRONT GRILLE, and has no DC socket at all.

    So a lead that suited an older car may be the wrong length for a newer one, and a lead bought for the new car will be longer than an old one needs. Open the flap and look before you order anything.

    A plug-in hybrid with a 38 kWh battery

    The current car carries 38.2 kWh gross with 31.8 kWh usable, and Land Rover own technical insert and the German catalogue agree on both figures to the decimal. That is three times the battery of an ordinary plug-in hybrid and it shows in the electric range: 73 miles on the P460e and 72 on the P550e, with Land Rover marketing up to 74.

    The old P400e is a different proposition entirely, with 13.1 kWh and about 25 miles WLTP, and no usable figure ever published.

    Seven kilowatts, and why that is the whole story

    The good news is the absence of a catch. Land Rover specifies a single phase 7 kW charger, not an 11 kW three phase one, so the quoted charge time already describes a normal house.

    The arithmetic settles it beyond argument. Land Rover quotes five hours to a full charge on a 7 kW wall box and the German data gives 300 minutes at 7.0 kW single phase. Thirty-one point eight kilowatt hours over five hours is 6.36 kW. An 11 kW charger would finish the same pack in under three hours, and 7.4 kW on one phase in four and a quarter. Neither matches, so the car is a single phase 7 kW vehicle and the five hour figure is real. The ceiling is the car, so a heavier cable finishes at the same time.

    The 7.2 kW figure you may see in American coverage is the same hardware quoted against a different mains voltage, not a faster charger.

    Rapid charging, with an honest note on the number

    The current car does rapid charge, and the figure is disputed. Land Rover UK technical insert says 50 kW with forty minutes to eighty per cent. Land Rover Germany and the German catalogue both say 43 kW with under sixty minutes. Land Rover own UK marketing page hedges to charge up to eighty per cent in under an hour, which agrees with the lower figure rather than its own insert.

    Both are internally consistent: twenty-five kilowatt hours in forty minutes is a 38 kW average, which needs a nearly flat 50 kW curve, while the same energy in sixty minutes is 25 kW average and fits a 43 kW peak that tapers. We would plan on under an hour. The old P400e has no DC socket at all, so none of this applies to it.

    Figures are calculated rather than quoted: battery divided by power, 13 per cent for losses, quarter hour rounding. The miles column uses 3.5 miles per kWh, which holds up in winter as well as summer. Columns are the current car at 31.8 kWh usable and the older P400e at 13.1 kWh gross. Land Rover own figures are five hours and fifteen hours respectively for wall box and domestic socket on the current car.

    Five hours is a comfortable overnight on a cheap tariff, and it buys 73 miles of electric range, which for most owners is the entire week of local driving.

    Which length for a Range Rover Sport

    The current car is 4.95 metres with the socket at the rear, so ten metres is the default and fifteen suits a long driveway or a detached garage. The older P400e, charging from the grille, can often manage five metres if it noses into the space.

    Work it out from where the car genuinely sits, not where it could sit, and leave slack. On a vehicle this size the slack matters, because the lead has to curve rather than run straight.

    Where is the charge socket on a Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid?

    On the rear flank on the 2022-on car. On the 2018 to 2022 P400e it is set into the front grille, which is a completely different cable length.

    Is it an 11 kW car?

    No. It is single phase 7 kW, and Land Rover quotes five hours to a full charge to prove it. An 11 kW charger would do the same 31.8 kWh pack in under three hours.

    How far does it go on electricity?

    73 miles WLTP on the P460e and 72 on the P550e, from a 38.2 kWh battery of which 31.8 kWh is usable. The old P400e managed about 25 miles.
