    The ceiling is the car, not your electricity

    Unusually, there is no phase penalty to explain. The onboard charger is a 6.6 kW single phase unit drawing about 29 amps, which a British house delivers without difficulty. The limit is the car, and you reach it at home just as you would anywhere.

    The evidence here is unusually tidy. Omoda publishes the 6.6 kW maximum in Italy, which is a three phase market, so it is an absolute ceiling rather than a three phase figure that shrinks. And the German technical catalogue confirms the same Chery group charging unit as single phase only on the closely related Jaecoo 7, with AC listed at 6.6 and nothing above it.

    Paying for more amps buys nothing here, since the car will not draw them. So a 32A cable is the right lead because it carries 6.6 kW without working hard, and nothing larger has anything to offer.

    Rapid charging on a plug-in hybrid

    The Omoda 7 has a genuine CCS2 socket rated at 40 kW, with thirty to eighty per cent in 20 minutes. Half of an 18.4 kWh pack in twenty minutes is a 27.6 kW average, which is a plausible curve under a 40 kW peak.

    On a plug-in hybrid that facility is worth more than the number suggests, because it means the electric range can be replenished away from home rather than only overnight. There is also vehicle-to-load at 3.3 kW, and the UK owner manual states that as a hard limit on the total power of connected appliances.

    Battery and range

    The pack is 18.4 kWh of lithium iron phosphate from CATL, and the owner manual gives 52.5 amp hours at 350.56 volts, which multiplies out to 18.41 - a rare case where the published figure can be checked against the cell data. Electric range is 56 miles WLTP across all three UK trims, or 92 kilometres combined and 128 urban on the Italian homologation.

    No usable figure is published, which is the standard position across this group, so 18.4 kWh is the number and its basis is unstated. Beware outlets quoting 34.46 kWh and 150 kilometres for an Omoda 7: those figures belong to the Omoda 9.

    Hours are worked from battery size against power drawn, plus a 13 per cent allowance for what is lost as heat, rounded to fifteen minutes. The range column assumes 3.5 miles per kWh rather than a summer best case. Working from 18.4 kWh with no usable figure available. Omoda own Italian figure is 25 to 100 per cent in two hours forty minutes.

    Three and a half hours from flat on the top row, which is an evening on a cheap tariff. Fifty-six miles of electric range replaced in that time covers most days without the engine starting at all.

    Which length for an Omoda 7

    An honest caveat on the position. The socket is on the offside rear, but that comes from reading the illustration in Omoda own UK owner manual rather than from a specification sheet, because the Omoda 7 is not in the Australian or New Zealand ranges and has no German catalogue entry. We would rather tell you how we know than present it as certain.

    On that basis, and on a car of 4.59 metres, ten metres is the sensible default and five works where the car reverses in beside the charge point. Note the Omoda 9 charges from the other side. Choose on the real distance from inlet to charge point, not the distance on the drawing, and never buy it tight.

    How fast does an Omoda 7 charge at home?

    6.6 kW, which is its full rate because the charger is single phase. Omoda quotes 25 to 100 per cent in two hours forty minutes.

    Do I need a 32A cable?

    The 32A lead is what carries the full 6.6 kW comfortably. A 16A cable at 3.6 kW would roughly double the charge time, and nothing above 32A helps.

    Can it rapid charge?

    Yes, at 40 kW on CCS2, thirty to eighty per cent in twenty minutes, which is generous for a plug-in hybrid.

    Which side is the charge socket on?

    The offside rear. That comes from the illustration in Omoda own UK owner manual, since no spec sheet states it, and the Omoda 9 is on the opposite side.
