    The e-C4 has been sold with a 50 kWh pack, 46.3 kWh usable, quoted at 222 miles, and from late 2024 with a 54 kWh pack of NMC811 chemistry, 50.8 kWh usable, quoted at 257 to 260 miles. The e-C4 X saloon mirrors both: a 50 kWh entry car at 219 miles and a 54 kWh version at 260 to 265 miles.

    Rapid charging steps up slightly with the larger pack, from 101 kW peak and 74 kW average on the 50 kWh cars to 107 kW peak and 79 kW average on the 54. On AC nothing changes at all, so one cable answers the question across the whole family and across both body styles.

    Where the socket really is

    The charge flap sits on the nearside rear wing, in the place a fuel filler would normally live. That is the kerb side of the car in Britain, at the back, so reversing in is what brings it close to a wall box near the house.

    This is worth saying clearly because the e-C4 is sometimes described as having a front charging flap. It does not. Every variant records the port at the left side rear, which on a right-hand-drive car is the nearside rear, and the body is not mirrored between left and right-hand-drive markets. If you have been quoted a cable length on the assumption of a front socket, measure again.

    The two chargers, and why one of them is a trap

    Citroen fits a 7.4 kW single phase charger as standard and sells an 11 kW three phase unit as an option. The option is for markets where three phases arrive at the building; at a British house it gives the same 7.4 kW the standard charger already does.

    Citroen is refreshingly blunt about this in its own paperwork. The price list for the vans warns that the optional 11 kW three phase charger "will actually charge your vehicle more slowly than the standard 7.4 kW single-phase onboard charger" where only one phase is available. That is a manufacturer telling you not to buy its own upgrade, which is about as clear as this gets.

    The size of the difference is documented on the e-C4 X: a full charge takes seven and a half hours on the single phase charger against five hours on three phases. Those five hours are unobtainable at a British house, so the seven and a half hour figure is the one that describes your driveway. No cable can lift that figure: the onboard charger decides it.

    Hours are worked from battery size against power drawn, plus a 13 per cent allowance for what is lost as heat, rounded to fifteen minutes. The miles column uses 3.5 miles per kWh, which holds up in winter as well as summer. Columns are the 50 kWh badge at 46.3 kWh usable and the 54 kWh badge at 50.8.

    Seven to eight hours from empty puts either car comfortably inside an overnight cheap-rate window. At 7.4 kW the e-C4 gains about 26 miles for every hour plugged in, which is the number to plan around rather than the full-charge figure.

    Which length for an e-C4

    The hatchback is 4.36 metres and the e-C4 X 4.6, with the socket at the nearside rear on both. Reversing onto the drive with the charge point on the left is the five metre case. Anything else and ten metres is the sensible buy, particularly on the X.

    Pace it out from the socket to the flap with the car parked as it always is, then allow a little extra. On a car where the socket is at the back, the two metres of slack matters more than it sounds, because the lead has to curve round the bodywork rather than run straight.

    How these cables are built

    Citroen e-C4 charging cable questions

    Where is the charge port on an e-C4?

    Nearside rear, in the fuel-filler position, on every e-C4 and e-C4 X. It is not on the front wing, despite some listings saying so.

    What cable does an e-C4 need?

    A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The same lead suits the 50 kWh and 54 kWh cars and both body styles.

    Is the 11 kW three phase charger worth the money?

    Not at a house. Citroen itself warns in its van price list that the three phase charger is slower than the standard single phase one where only one phase is available.

    How long does an e-C4 take to charge at home?

    About seven hours for the 50 kWh car and eight for the 54 kWh, from empty at 7.4 kW. Each hour on charge is worth roughly 26 miles.
