Read the row for your car and you have your answer. The link on the model takes you to the port position, the battery sizes and the charging times.
Two models, the ForTwo in coupe and cabrio form and the ForFour, both Type 2, both charging from the offside rear three quarter panel. There are two widely repeated claims about these cars and both are wrong.
There is no rapid charging socket, and there never was
No UK Smart EQ ForTwo, cabrio or ForFour of any model year has a DC inlet. The owner manual charging table lists AC only with no Mode 4 section at all, the databases show a dash for rapid charging on every 453 entry, and the UK price lists carry an onboard charger row and no DC row.
The myth comes from smart's own marketing, which described the 22 kW AC charger as a rapid charging function and quoted ten to eighty per cent in under forty minutes. That is AC, not DC, and it matters because a CCS cable will never plug into one of these cars.
How the models differ, and where it matters
One phase at 32 amps is about 7.4 kW, and that governs the whole table.
The second correction concerns the 22 kW charger. On 2017 to 2019 UK cars a 7 kW single phase unit was standard and 22 kW was a £275 option. From the 2020 facelift the 22 kW charger became standard: the UK price list technical data prints it for all three bodystyles. The 4.6 kW standard with 22 kW optional arrangement quoted almost everywhere is the continental European specification, not the British one.
Either way you get about 7.4 kW at home, so the 32 amp option is the sensible order, because 22 kW needs three phases at 32 amps each. Do not take smart's own home charging time at face value either: its quoted three hours eighteen minutes works back to roughly 3.6 kW, and the footnote admits the figure assumes a 16 amp cable. On a 32 amp lead the same charge takes about half as long.
Working out the length
Two things set the length: where your charge point is mounted and which corner of the car the flap sits in. Get both and the answer is obvious. Guess either and you will either be stretching a lead or coiling four spare metres on the drive.
The ForTwo is the shortest car we sell a cable for at 2.7 metres, so five metres is genuinely sufficient in most arrangements even with the socket on the offside. The ForFour needs a little more.
