Three models, all Type 2, and the split between them follows the BMW drivetrain rule rather than anything Mini specific: the battery electrics charge from one flank and the plug-in hybrid from the other.
What varies across the {M} range
British homes run one phase, so the useful number is what the car takes from it rather than its rated maximum.
The Mini Electric and the Aceman both reach 7.4 kW, so the 32 amp lead is the one to order. The Countryman splits across generations, at 3.7 kW on the earlier plug-in hybrid and 7.4 kW on the current car, so the year on the V5 decides whether a 16 amp lead is already enough.
The port position is the practical difference. The electric cars charge from the offside rear quarter, behind the rear door, while the Countryman plug-in hybrid charges from the NEARSIDE. That is the opposite flank on two cars sharing a showroom, and it follows the parent company's pattern of putting plug-in hybrid sockets on the nearside and battery electric sockets on the offside.
Neither the position nor the rate mirrors for right hand drive. BMW Group describes right hand drive cars as charging on the left where that is the case, so a British car behaves exactly as the documentation says.
Picking a length for your driveway
A length is easy to get right and annoying to get wrong. Measure from the charge point to where the flap will be, allow for routing round a wheel rather than under it, and round up.
These are short cars, which forgives a lot. Even the awkward combination of an offside rear socket and a nearside charge point is usually inside five metres on a Mini Electric, though ten gives you freedom over which way you park.
How these cables are built
