Type: EV Charging Cables > Type 2 > BMW
Inlet type Type 2, AC only
Max onboard AC 11 kW three phase on the 2024 car
On a UK home supply 7.4 kW on the 2024 car
Charge port position Front nearside wing, between the wheel arch and the A-pillar
Cable we recommend Type 2 to Type 2, 32A on the 2024 car

    Three generations, one socket position

The 530e has run through the 2017 iPerformance with a 9.2 kWh battery, the 2019 facelift at 12 kWh, and the 2024 G60 with 19.4 kWh usable and 64 miles of WLTP range. Throughout, the charging flap has stayed on the front nearside wing, between the wheel arch and the A-pillar.

The 2024 car takes 11 kW on three phase, which is 7.4 kW at a British house, so the 32A cable earns its place there. We do not have a verified AC figure for the earlier generations, so rather than guess we would say this: check the charging time in your own handbook, and if a full charge is quoted at three hours or more, a 16A cable is all your car can use.

    Which length to buy

A front nearside socket is one of the easier positions to live with. Park nose in with the wall box on the house wall and 5 metres reaches with slack. Reverse onto the drive and the lead crosses the length of a five metre saloon, so 10 metres.

Take a tape measure to the run, inlet to charge point, and add a couple of metres before choosing. One thing worth clearing up: BMW's own press material for this car describes the socket as being on the driver's side, because it was written for left hand drive markets. On a UK 530e the front left wing is the passenger side.

How long a full charge takes

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 9.2 kWh battery Empty to full, 12 kWh battery Empty to full, 19.4 kWh battery Range added per hour
    2024 car, 32A at home 7.4 kW 1 hours 30 mins 1 hours 45 mins 3 hours about 26 miles
    16A cable 3.7 kW 2 hours 45 mins 3 hours 45 mins 6 hours about 13 miles
Three pin from a socket 2.3 kW 4 hours 30 mins 6 hours 9 hours 30 mins about 8 miles

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. The columns are the three battery sizes in order of age. Treat the first two columns as the arithmetic for a 7.4 kW supply rather than a claim about what those cars accept, since their AC rate is not something we can verify.

    How these cables are built

Construction is to IEC 62196-2 with CE marking, IP55 weather protection and a -30C to +50C operating range.

On the three pin side the standard is IEC 62752, with CE marking, IP67 sealing and a -30C to +60C range. Backed by a two year manufacturer's warranty, with free next working day delivery and a 30 day return window.

    BMW 530e charging cable questions

Which side is the 530e charging socket on?

The front nearside wing, the kerb side, between the front wheel arch and the A-pillar. It is the same on the G30 and the G60. BMW press material calls it the driver's side because that copy was written for left hand drive cars.

What cable does a BMW 530e need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. On the 2024 car take 32A, since it accepts 11 kW on three phase and 7.4 kW at home. On older cars, check the handbook charge time: a slow quoted time means a 16A lead is enough.

How long does the 2024 530e take to charge?

About three hours from empty on a 7.4 kW home charge point for the 19.4 kWh usable battery, which is 64 miles of WLTP range put back.

    Does it rapid charge?

No, the 530e is AC only. That is usual for a plug-in hybrid, where the battery is small enough to fill overnight from a wall box.
