Type: EV Charging Cables > Type 2 > BMW
Inlet type Type 2 for AC, inside the combined CCS inlet
Max onboard AC 11 kW three phase as standard, 22 kW optional
On a UK home supply 7.4 kW
Charge port position Rear offside, on the right hand rear quarter
Cable we recommend Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase

The coupe roof costs range, not charging speed

The iX2 is the iX1 with a sloping tail, and it shares the 64.8 kWh usable pack and the same charging hardware. eDrive20 is quoted at up to 297 miles WLTP, xDrive30 at roughly 267 to 273. Nothing about the cable changes between the two.

Those 11 kW and 22 kW ratings need three phases to appear. On a normal home supply the number is 7.4 kW. The 22 kW option exists on the order form, but it needs three phases arriving at the charge point to do anything, and at a house they do not.

How long a full charge takes

Cable Power drawn at home Empty to full, 64.8 kWh battery Range added per hour
Type 2, 32A single phase at home 7.4 kW 10 hours about 26 miles
    Type 2, 16A 3.7 kW 19 hours 45 mins about 13 miles
Type 2, three phase at 11 kW 11.0 kW 6 hours 45 mins about 38 miles
    Type 2 to 3 Pin from a socket 2.3 kW 31 hours 45 mins about 8 miles

The arithmetic is simple: kWh over kW, 13 per cent on top for losses, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. The range column is deliberately cautious, at 3.5 miles per kWh.

The 64.8 kWh figure is the one independent databases publish for both versions. We have seen a larger capacity and a longer range claimed for recent cars, but nothing we could trace to BMW or verify, so those numbers are not on this page.

    Which length for an iX2

The socket is on the rear offside quarter, the right hand side of the body, exactly where the iX1 puts it. On a UK car that is the driver's side, and it is fixed to the body rather than mirrored for the steering position.

The iX2 is 4.55 metres long. Back it in with the charge point on the right and 5 metres will reach. Everything else, nose-in parking especially, wants 10 metres because the cable has to travel most of the car's length before it arrives. The honest way to choose is to measure the real parking position and allow two metres spare.

    How these cables are built

The cable meets IEC 62196-2, carries the CE mark, is sealed to IP55 and is specified from -30C to +50C.

The three pin unit is IEC 62752 compliant, CE marked, IP67 against water and rated -30C to +60C. Two year manufacturer's warranty. Delivery is free and next working day, and returns are open for 30 days.

    BMW iX2 charging cable questions

What cable does a BMW iX2 use?

A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The 11 kW specification is a three phase number; on a UK home supply the car draws 7.4 kW.

How long is a full charge on an iX2?

Roughly ten hours from flat at 7.4 kW on the 64.8 kWh battery. An overnight off peak window of seven hours is worth about 180 miles.

Where is the charge port on an iX2?

The rear offside quarter, on the right of the body, the same position as the iX1. That is the driver's side on a right hand drive car.

Is the iX2 any different from the iX1 to charge?

No. Same pack, same onboard charger, same port position, same cable. The coupe roofline costs a little range and nothing else.
