A 22 kW claim worth ignoring

The Q6 e-tron is listed in some technical data as accepting between 11 and 22 kW on AC. When a German motoring organisation tested the car, it found AC charging worked at 11 kW only and not at 22, and reported that plainly.

We mention it because the 22 kW figure is circulating, and someone might buy a three phase cable on the strength of it. Even if the option becomes active, it would need three phases to mean anything, and a British house has one. Three phase ratings describe a supply most British houses do not have, so the working figure at home is 7.4 kW. The 32A single phase cable covers it in full. Anything quoted quicker elsewhere is a three phase figure rather than a home one.

Two battery sizes on an 800 volt platform

The entry Q6 carries 75.8 kWh usable from an 83 kWh pack. The performance, quattro and SQ6 carry 94.9 kWh usable from 100 gross, with range quoted up to 395 miles across the range and 348 to 364 on the SQ6.

Audi UK quotes fifteen hours for a full charge on the SQ6 against a 7.4 kW wall box, which is a real single phase figure and lines up with the table below. DC is where the 800 volt architecture shows: 225 kW on the entry car and up to 270 on the rest.

How long a full charge takes

The calculation is the battery over the delivered kW, uplifted 13 per cent for charging losses, quarter hour rounded. Range added per hour assumes a year round 3.5 miles per kWh rather than a best case figure. Columns are the entry car and the larger pack shared by the performance, quattro and SQ6.

Fourteen and a half hours on the big battery is the headline, and the useful number underneath it is that a seven hour night tariff window puts about 180 miles back, which covers most weeks of driving.

Which length for a Q6 e-tron

Audi does not publish the charge port position for the Q6 e-tron and we have not found it stated anywhere we trust, so we will not tell you where it is. It takes a moment to look, and on a 4.77 metre SUV that moment decides whether you need 5 or 10 metres.

If it turns out to be on the same side as your charge point once the car is parked normally, 5 metres will do. If not, 10 metres. On a car this size and price it is not worth being ten per cent short. Pace it out from the socket to the flap with the car parked as it always is, then allow a little extra.

How these cables are built

Standards are IEC 62196-2 and CE, protection is IP55, and the specified working range runs -30C to +50C.

The three pin version is an IEC 62752 unit, CE marked and IP67 sealed, specified -30C to +60C. Warranty is two years from the manufacturer, delivery free next working day, returns accepted for 30 days.
