    The pre facelift car is a 3.6 kW car and nothing will change that

    If your Leon e-Hybrid is a 2020 to mid 2024 registration, its onboard charger is a 3.6 kW single phase unit. That is the ceiling. Seat quotes a full charge in three hours forty two minutes on a 3.6 kW supply, and a 7 kW home charge point will not beat it because the car cannot take 7 kW.

    That is not a criticism of the car, it is simply how Volkswagen Group specified the first generation of these plug-in hybrids. Volkswagen own material describes the later upgrade as going to "up to 11 kW (previously 3.6 kW)", which confirms what the earlier number was.

    No rapid charging at all before 2024

    Seat own owner manual says it in as many words: "Direct current charging is not compatible with this vehicle." The 2023 edition is even blunter about it. There is no rapid charging on this one, and no socket that could offer it. Every kilowatt hour it ever receives comes down the Type 2 cable, so the lead is a functional part of the car rather than something kept in the boot for emergencies.

    The 2024 facelift changed that, adding 50 kW DC for the first time along with a much larger battery. If you have a post facelift car you have a rapid socket; if not, you do not, and no software update will produce one.

    The facelift moved almost everything

    The battery went from 13.1 kWh gross with 10.6 usable to 25.7 gross with 19.7 usable. Electric range went from 36 to 40 miles to 78 or 83 depending on body. The charger went to 11 kW three phase, which at a British house gives 7.4 kW. And DC charging appeared.

    One note on published figures: Seat own manual technical data table prints 12.8 kWh next to a "48V" label for the earlier car, which is an error in that table. Volkswagen Group publishes 10.6 kWh net for the same pack, and we would trust that.

    Hours come from dividing the pack by the power the car actually draws, with 13 per cent added for losses. Range added per hour assumes a year round 3.5 miles per kWh rather than a best case figure. The two battery figures cover the cars before and after the facelift.

    On the earlier car a full charge is under four hours, so an evening covers it comfortably even at 3.6 kW. There is no urgency to a 32 amp cable except that it is the more useful thing to own long term.

    Which length for a Leon

    The socket is at the front, which is less common and helpful. Seat own manual describes it as behind the battery charging cover on the front left hand side, with the manual release between the left wing panel and the bonnet hinge. In British terms that is the nearside front wing.

    A front socket on a 4.4 metre hatchback means nosing into a bay puts the inlet close to a wall box, so five metres often does. Ten metres is the safer choice if you reverse in. Park the car where it normally lives, walk the run with a tape, and buy the next size up from what you measure.

    How these cables are built

    Standards are IEC 62196-2 and CE, protection is IP55, and the specified working range runs -30C to +50C.

    Seat Leon e-Hybrid charging cable questions

    Will a 7 kW home charger charge my Leon e-Hybrid faster?

    Only on a 2024 or later car. The earlier car has a 3.6 kW single phase charger and cannot take more, so a 7 kW point matches a 16 amp one.

    Can a Leon e-Hybrid rapid charge?

    Not before the 2024 facelift. Seat own manual states DC charging is not compatible. The facelift added 50 kW DC.

    What length cable do I need?

    Five metres often works because the socket is at the front. Ten metres if you reverse onto the drive.
