The e-Skyactiv R-EV, which reached the UK in 2023, is a range extender with a 17.8 kWh battery, 53 miles of electric range and over 400 miles in total, and its generator is an 830 cc single rotor Wankel engine that never drives the wheels.

That rotary is the only one in production and it is genuinely interesting, but for charging purposes what matters is the smaller battery and a slightly different charger: 7.2 kW on the R-EV against 6.6 kW on the electric car, with DC dropping from 50 kW to 36 kW.

Both take their full rate at home

This is one of the cars that loses nothing on a domestic supply. The 6.6 kW charger is single phase by design at roughly 29 amps, well inside what a home charge point provides, so the car takes its full rated power on any ordinary driveway.

That is the electric car. The German catalogue records it as single phase only, with 300 minutes to a full charge on a 6.6 kW wall box; 32 kWh over five hours is 6.4 kW, which fits. The R-EV is quoted by Mazda UK at 7.2 kW for twenty to eighty per cent in one hour thirty minutes against a home or public charger, which is the same unit the CX-60 uses.

The ceiling is the car, so a heavier cable finishes at the same time. There is one unresolved wrinkle: from April 2022 the continental MX-30 was re-specified to an 11 kW three phase charger, on which the German data models only about 3.0 kW from a single phase. Whether UK cars of that period ever got the 11 kW unit is not established - the UK-facing data still shows 6.6 kW. If you have a 2022-on car and it charges noticeably slower than five hours, that is the reason.

Where Mazda puts the socket, and it is not where BMW puts it

Offside rear quarter, and we can be unusually confident because Mazda own rescue manual gives the procedure for releasing a stuck connector: remove the rear mud guard on the right side and reach in from inside the tyre housing. That is an absolute statement about the physical side of the car, not a translation.

It is worth noting that Mazda does not follow the convention other manufacturers use of putting plug-in hybrid sockets at the front and electric car sockets at the rear. Both the MX-30 and the R-EV charge from the offside rear, and so does the CX-60 plug-in hybrid. The fuel filler on the R-EV is on the opposite flank.

How long a full charge takes

Cable

Power drawn at home

Empty to full, 17.8 kWh battery

Empty to full, 32 kWh battery

Range added per hour

Type 2, 32A, electric car at 6.6 kW

6.6 kW

3 hours

5 hours 30 mins

about 23 miles

Type 2, 32A, R-EV at 7.2 kW

7.2 kW

2 hours 45 mins

5 hours

about 25 miles

Type 2, 16A at 3.6 kW

3.6 kW

5 hours 30 mins

10 hours

about 13 miles

Type 2 to 3 Pin from a socket

2.3 kW

8 hours 45 mins

15 hours 45 mins

about 8 miles

Those times come from dividing the pack by the delivered power and adding 13 per cent for losses, then rounding to the quarter hour.
