The reason for that second figure is unusual enough to be worth a section of its own.

Why the Recharge plug-in hybrids stop at 3.7 kW

Volvo does not hide this, which is to its credit. Its own model year 2024 specification sheets describe the onboard charger as a two phase 6.4 kW unit and then add, in brackets, that home charging is limited to 3.7 kW. That bracket is Volvo's, not ours.

A two phase charger needs two live phases to reach its rating. A British house has one, so the car takes 16 amps from it and lands at 3.7 kW. It is not a fault and no setting changes it. A 16 amp lead therefore delivers everything an S90, V60, V90, XC60 or XC90 Recharge can accept, and a 32 amp lead buys flexibility rather than speed.

What the third column means

The column to trust is the third one. It states what each car takes from an ordinary British house rather than what it could take in a country where three phases reach the meter. Those two numbers are often different and the difference is never the cable.

What actually separates one Volvo from another

The EX30, the EX90 and the XC40 Recharge, now sold as the EX40, all reach 7.4 kW at a British house and want the 32 amp lead. The C40 and EC40 share every charging answer with the XC40, so if you have one of those the XC40 page applies to it in full.

Port position is consistent in a way the rest of the range is not: Volvo charges from the rear nearside, the kerb side at the back, with one front nearside exception. Volvo does not publish the position for every model, and where that is the case the model page says so instead of inferring it.

Choosing a length

The mistake to avoid is buying for the length of the car rather than the length of the run. What matters is the distance from your charge point to the flap, which depends on which way you park. Ten metres removes the question on most British driveways.

An EX90 is five metres long with a rear socket, so ten is the honest recommendation. The kerb side position helps at a public post and makes reversing onto a drive the cheaper option in cable terms.

How these cables are built

Whatever your car, the cable is the same underneath. At 5.04 metres the EX90 is one of the longest things on this site, and a rear port on a five metre car means 5 metres of cable only works when you reverse in and the charge point is on the left. The electric XC40 is a conventional 11 kW three phase unit, which is worth stating plainly because Volvo's plug-in hybrids are not: those need two phases to reach 6.4 kW and fall back to 3.7 kW at home. This car does not have that problem and takes a straightforward 7.4 kW from a single phase supply.

No 22 kW option has ever been offered on the XC40 or EX40, and an owners' forum thread confirms the car supports three phase 16 amp only. One outlet states the V60 has the 6.4 kW charger as standard and will fill on a 7.4 kW home wallbox in three hours. That cannot be true if 6.4 kW needs two phases, and the figures that do hold together are the quieter ones: roughly two and a half hours from a 3.7 kW wall box and six from a three pin socket, on 14.7 kWh usable. Without a Type 2 cable in the boot the electric half of the car is inert and you are driving a heavy petrol estate.

One honest caveat about the figures below

The limit comes from Volvo rather than from us. Its 2024 spec sheets describe a two phase 6.4 kW charger and add, in brackets, that home charging is capped at 3.7 kW. So 16A is the cable, and that part is not in doubt. What we cannot give you with the same confidence is the V90's own pack size: the 11.6 kWh and 31 to 36 mile figures in wide circulation belong to the pre-2022 car and are being recycled for the newer one, and Volvo's published 14.7 kWh usable is stated for the V90's siblings rather than for the V90 itself.

Which changes our estimate of the hours and nothing about the purchase, because charge rate comes from the supply and the onboard charger while pack size only sets how long it runs. A bigger cable cannot change this, because the limit sits in the car rather than the lead.

Hours, on the best figures available

Cable

Power drawn at home

Empty to full, 14.7 kWh battery

Range added per hour

Type 2 to Type 2, 16A at 3.7 kW

3.7 kW

4 hours 30 mins

about 13 miles

Three pin from a 13A socket

2.3 kW

7 hours 15 mins

about 8 miles

Times below are computed from the pack size and the power drawn with 13 per cent allowed for charging losses.
