Type 1 is five pins in a round housing with the latch on the plug. Type 2 is seven pins with one flat edge. The 2012 to 2016 car takes about 2.2 kW and later cars 3.3 kW, and no generation has a DC socket despite a DC charging time appearing in Toyota's own 2024 brochure.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eToyota 6.6 kW chargers are single phase, which is good news\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA British house gives one phase, so roughly 7.4 kW is the ceiling however a brochure is worded.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is the one brand where a figure below 7.4 kW is close to an advantage. Three of these cars, the two plug-in hybrids and the launch bZ4X, carry 6.6 kW single phase chargers, and a British house delivers every watt. Toyota says so itself about the RAV4: a 32 amp Mode 3 cable and a wall box recharge it in about two and a half hours \"with no impact on the customer domestic power supply\".\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAgainst an 11 kW three phase car, which arrives at 7.4 kW here, the real gap is twelve per cent rather than the forty the ratings imply.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhat changes from model to model\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe bZ4X goes by build date rather than badge: launch cars have the 6.6 kW single phase unit, cars from late 2022 an 11 kW three phase one, and the 2025 High grade 22 kW. At a house those land at 6.6, 7.4 and 7.4 kW, so the 22 kW option buys nothing.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is a range where the socket genuinely moves about, so the length you need depends on which model you have. The pages below give the position for each. The bZ4X charges from the nearside front wing, which is unusual and helpful. The RAV4 uses the offside rear. The Prius moved from offside rear to nearside rear at the 2023 car. For the C-HR plug-in hybrid Toyota does not document the position anywhere we would trust, and we say so rather than guess.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003c!-- split --\u003e\u003ch2\u003eGetting the length right\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA length is easy to get right and annoying to get wrong. Launch cars have \"a 6.6kW on-board charger\" and \"a full charge using a 230V\/32A supply will take around 9.5 hours\". Then: \"From Q4 2022, an 11kW three-phase on-board charger will replace the initial 6.6kW unit\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat matters here is that the 6.6 kW is single phase. There is no second or third phase waiting unused, no gap between the brochure and the driveway. Plug into a 7 kW home point and the car takes everything it is built to take. So the early car takes 6.6 kW at a British house and the later one takes 7.4 kW. Roughly eleven per cent apart, not the forty per cent the ratings suggest, and there is nothing on the spec sheet that tells you which you have. The build date does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eThe MY25 car went to 22 kW, and it makes no difference here\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe 2025 update made 11 kW standard across the range with a 22 kW three phase charger on the High grade. If you are looking at a car with the 22 kW charger option, understand what it does and does not buy. Twenty two kilowatts means 32 amps across three phases. A British house has one phase. The car takes 32 amps of it, arrives at 7.4 kW, and the expensive charger sits there being no faster than the standard one. It earns its money at a 22 kW public AC post and nowhere else.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eEV Database shows the tables side by side for the MY25 car: a single phase 32 amp supply gives 7.4 kW and eleven hours; three phase 32 amps gives 22 kW and three hours forty five. The second row belongs to a building with an industrial connection, not a house.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eThe socket is at the front, which is unusual\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCharging happens at the nose, which is unusual and useful. There is no nearside or offside to worry about, only how far the front of the car sits from the charge point when it is parked as it always is.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eUK reviewers noticed it: the charging port is on the front nearside wing with an \"Electric\" badge beside it, and separately, the port is on the front left hand side of the car. Toyota US describes the same panel as the driver side front quarter on a left hand drive car, which is the same physical side. AC and DC share the one combined inlet, so there is nothing to split.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBatteries and range, which moved twice\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCars to MY24 have 71.4 kWh gross with 64 usable, and WLTP range of 286 to 317 miles depending on drive. MY25 brought two packs: 57.7 kWh gross with 54 usable, and 73.1 gross with 69 usable and up to 354 miles.
