Some MGs charge from the centre of the nose, others from the rear nearside, and one changed flank partway through its life.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eReading the home charging column\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA single phase supply and a 32 amp charge point give about 7.4 kW, and that is the ceiling for every car listed. Higher ratings need three phases that British housing stock does not have, and lower ratings are set by the car. The table shows what each model actually takes, not what its brochure headline says.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe differences that change your order\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn charging rate the range is tight: the MG4, MG5 and S5 at 6.6 kW and the ZS at 7 kW, and a 32 amp lead meets it exactly. Treat a lower rating with less suspicion than it deserves. Where the charger is single phase the car collects its whole rating at a British house, which a three phase car never does.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe HS plug-in hybrid is the one that needs its year checking. The 2020 to 2024 car runs a 3.7 kW charger and a 16 amp lead covers it; the later car takes 6.6 kW. It also swapped flanks mid-life, from the rear offside to the rear nearside, so a used HS can differ from another used HS in both respects.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe socket position is the detail to look up rather than infer here. It differs between models, and each page gives it. The MG5 and ZS sit behind a section of the grille at the centre of the nose, a completely different run from the MG4 and S5 at the rear nearside. Get it wrong and a five metre lead will not reach.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003c!-- split --\u003e\u003ch2\u003eGetting the length right\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWork out the run, not the car. A socket on the far flank from your charge point adds the width of the vehicle to the distance, and a socket at the opposite end adds its length. The miles column uses 3.5 miles per kWh, which holds up in winter as well as summer. The three columns are the Standard Range, the 64 kWh cars and the Extended Range. There is no three phase row because the MG4 has no three phase capability to put in one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDC rapid charging is where the MG4 is strong, and the figure has climbed with the model years: roughly 87 to 135 kW on the early Standard Range, 135 to 144 kW on the Long Range and Extended Range, and 154 kW on the 2026 Premium Long Range. Sources vary on the exact peak, which is why we give a range rather than pick one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhich length for an MG4\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWorth reading this bit even if you think you know. The MG4 charges from the rear nearside, behind the left rear wheel, not from the front. Plenty of guides say front, and getting it wrong flips the length advice completely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBecause the port is at the back left, reversing onto a drive with the charge point on the left is the easy case and 5 metres will do. Nose in, which is what most people do, and the cable has to travel the whole 4.3 metres of car plus the run to the socket, so \u003ca href=\"\/products\/10m-ev-charging-cables\"\u003e10 metres\u003c\/a\u003e is the buy. If you are not sure which way you park more often, buy 10.
