Thirty two amps on one phase is about 7.4 kW. A car rated at 11 or 22 kW meets that ceiling and stops; a car rated at 3.6 kW never reaches it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Soul changed connector, so check yours\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eTelling them apart takes a glance. A Type 1 socket is round with five pins; a Type 2 socket has seven and is squared off along one edge. A lead for one will not physically go into the other.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe first generation Soul EV is a Type 1 car and needs a Type 2 to Type 1 lead. The second generation moved to Type 2. The Soul page covers both and tells you how to tell them apart without looking anything up.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhat actually separates one Kia from another\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe numbered EV cars, the EV2, EV3, EV4, EV6 and EV9, all take 7.4 kW at a British house and all want the 32 amp lead. The Niro sits just below at 7.2 kW on the older car and 7.4 on the newer, which makes no practical difference.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe plug-in hybrids are the ones to be careful with. The Optima and Sorento run 3.3 kW onboard chargers, so a 16 amp lead is already more than they can use, and the Sportage plug-in hybrid takes 7.2 kW. Buying a 32 amp cable for an Optima is not a mistake exactly, it just buys flexibility rather than speed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCharge port position is the other place Kia varies. The EV cars and most of the range charge from the rear offside or an offside front wing, but the first generation Soul charges from the centre of the nose behind a flap in the grille, which is a genuinely different cable run.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003c!-- split --\u003e\u003ch2\u003eChoosing a length\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eGet the length from your own driveway.
