The interesting part of this range is not the rate but where the socket is, which is not the same on all three.

How the models differ, and where it matters

British homes run one phase, so the useful number is what the car takes from it rather than its rated maximum.

On charging rate, nothing. The Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 Super Hybrids all run a 6.6 kW onboard charger drawing roughly 29 amps at 230 volts, which is inside what a single phase home charge point supplies. That means the wall box waits on the car rather than the other way round, which is the reverse of the usual problem and a genuinely good position to be in. It is worth resisting the instinct that bigger is better. A single phase charger is fully used on a British supply, which is not true of the three phase alternative.

One thing not to carry over from another model in this range: the charging position. It varies, and the individual pages name it. Two of the three charge from the offside rear quarter and one from the nearside rear flank with the fuel filler on the opposite side. On a brand this new that distinction is not well documented elsewhere, which is why each model page states it.

These are plug-in hybrids with substantial electric range rather than token batteries, so the cable does real work rather than sitting in the boot. Charging nightly is what makes the brochure fuel figures achievable at all.

One caution about the badge. Super Hybrid is Chery's name for the plug-in system, and the group also sells conventional hybrids and petrol cars that look much the same from outside and have no charging socket anywhere. If the car does not say Super Hybrid it will not take a lead from this page.

Working out the length

For length, the honest advice is to take a tape measure to the gap between your charge point and where the car will sit. Both are consistent with 6.6 kW and neither is compatible with 7.4.

One figure on Chery's own international page should be ignored: it quotes a nought to one hundred per cent time of 100 minutes at 6.6 kW for an 18.3 kWh battery. That is only eleven kilowatt hours of energy, so the number cannot be right. Around three hours is the answer.

A plug-in hybrid with real rapid charging

Unlike most plug-in hybrids the Tiggo 7 has a genuine CCS2 socket, rated at 40 kW, and Chery UK quotes thirty to eighty per cent in twenty minutes. On an 18.4 kWh battery that is a meaningful facility rather than a marketing line: half the pack back while you queue for a coffee.

It also means the home cable and the rapid socket divide the work sensibly. Chery UK quotes 87 miles of electric range, though 91 miles is widely repeated in the UK press from an earlier press pack. DC charging reaches 71 kW, giving thirty to eighty per cent in eighteen to twenty minutes, and the car offers 6.6 kW of vehicle-to-load power for running tools or appliances.

An export specification sheet also lists a 19 kWh front-wheel-drive grade with 41 kW DC charging. The range column is deliberately cautious, at 3.5 miles per kWh. Chery publishes no usable figure, so the 34.4 kWh rated capacity is used.
