Higher ratings need three phases that British housing stock does not have, and lower ratings are set by the car. The table shows what each model actually takes, not what its brochure headline says.

What actually separates one Audi from another

The A3 TFSI e and the Q3 TFSI e run 3.6 kW onboard chargers. That is the car limiting itself, not your supply, and a 16 amp lead already delivers all of it. Everything else here, from the Q5 TFSI e up to the e-tron GT and the Q6 e-tron, reaches 7.4 kW on a single phase and wants the 32 amp lead.

Where Audi gets genuinely interesting is the e-tron and e-tron GT, which carry a socket on each front wing. That is unusual, and it changes the cable you need rather than just being a curiosity: one inlet always faces your charge point, so a shorter lead often does a job that would need ten metres on a single port car of the same size. Only one of the two takes DC, which matters at a motorway rapid and not at all on a driveway.

Audi is the least forthcoming manufacturer here on charge port position. For several models it simply does not publish which flank the socket is on, and rather than infer it we say so on the model page and suggest you look. It takes ten seconds and beats a guess.

Choosing a length

Two things set the length: where your charge point is mounted and which corner of the car the flap sits in. Get both and the answer is obvious. Guess either and you will either be stretching a lead or coiling four spare metres on the drive.

The two-port e-tron cars are the exception to the usual advice and often need less than their size suggests. German technical data classifies this 7.4 kW figure as needing two electrical phases, which taken literally would leave a British house on about 3.7 kW. Audi UK's own charge times say otherwise and are hard to argue with: two and a half hours from empty on a 17.9 kWh battery, quoted against a 7 kW wall box, is simply not achievable at 3.7 kW. Nearly eighteen kilowatt hours in two and a half hours means the car is drawing over seven, which is a very different machine from the 3.6 kW-capped A3 and Q3 plug-ins. On an A7 the 32A cable is doing real work every single night.

The one thing the sources argue about

There is a genuine disagreement in the sources here and it is worth knowing about. The German technical classification treats 7.4 kW as a two phase figure, which would cut a British house to roughly 3.7 kW. Against that, Audi's own published wall box times only work if the car really does draw close to 7.4 kW from one phase, and its American material describes the same drivetrain filling in 2.4 hours from a single phase outlet. The weight of evidence favours 32A. Twenty two kilowatt hours in under four hours is a genuine 32A proposition.

The 2016 to 2019 Q7 e-tron is the diesel plug-in and a much older machine: 17.3 kWh and about 34 miles. A manufacturer video for the same car says four hours forty five. On a 17.3 kWh battery those imply roughly 3.5 kW and 1.8 kW respectively, which is a wide gap on a question that decides whether 16A or 32A is right.

Either way the answer lands on 16A being sufficient, because both figures sit well below what a 16A lead carries. Columns are the 2016 to 2019 diesel e-tron and the current TFSI e. Read the diesel down the 16A row, which sits above anything either source credits it with.

No Q7 plug-in of any generation, diesel or petrol, has ever had a DC socket. On a two and a half tonne seven seater that is a real constraint rather than a technicality: the electric range exists for the school run and the commute, and on a long motorway journey the petrol or diesel engine simply does the work while the battery sits empty.

Worth a caveat. The technical classification used in Germany says 7.4 kW here needs two phases, which a British house does not have. Audi's own wall box timings contradict that outright, and timings are harder to misfile than categories. We read it as a car that genuinely uses a 32A cable, while noting that the evidence is not unanimous and that a dealer can confirm it for your car in a phone call.

Which length for a Q7

Two things push this one towards a longer cable. The Q7 is 5.07 metres long and well over two metres wide with the mirrors out, so it takes up the full width of most domestic garages and drives, and the flap position is not published by anybody we would rely on.
